It seems to me like a lot of people haven't followed the details of why folks have issues with Substack, and basically assume that leaving the platform for moral or social reasons just automatically means giving up money.

But I don't think that's supported by the actual math.

One thing that's worth repeating: There is *zero* evidence that "substack helps you get readers". The only thing that we've ever seen that helps grow an audience is other authors mentioning your blog or newsletter, which is not the platform's doing. Substack just takes credit for that!

was just messing with @surf.social and it's surprisingly emotional. I made a feed for my local neighborhood and immediately could see local newspapers, businesses, residents, and city govt activity. Its beautiful, and completely impossible on social platforms. You can only do this on the open web.

Panel with Bluesky and Mastodon at the International Journalism Festival

Felix, CEO of Mastodon, and I hope to collaborate more. Mastodon has wide adoption in Europe and 8k communities (servers) running independently. The customization they give communities is inspiring to me. Public squares should be a gathering place for you to discover cozier corners/communities.
