No changes were observed in the control group, who underwent odorless training. Overall, our results suggest that in healthy individuals, smell training can influence cortical processing of odors, but the effects are likely odor-specific.
We investigated how 12 weeks of smell training affect cortical responses to odors in healthy adults using EEG. Participants who completed the training showed faster cortical responses to the odor they trained with, but not to untrained odor.
Our new paper has just been published in Cerebral Cortex 🧠
We are advertising for a postdoc with skills in psychophysiological measurement for a project on smell and emotions. Closing date is 30th October. Please spread the word.

Additionally, we retested a few participants 1.5 years after the training completion. We found that 9 out of 10 participants became specifically anosmic again, what shows that in the case of specific anosmia, the smell training effects are only transient.
We found that after two months of a systematic smell training, most of the participants gained sensitivity to odors they were unable to detect at baseline.
Our new paper on olfactory plasticity has just been published in Cortex 🧵
Some people with a healthy sense of smell are unable to perceive a few selected odors, a phenomenon known as specific anosmia. We checked if people can gain some perception of these smells via training.

I genuinely enjoyed The Forgotten Sense by Jonas Olofsson. It covers multiple areas of smell research in an engaging way, making it a great read for both experts and those just discovering the field.
Congratulations @jokriolo.bsky.social!
Can babies tell good from evil? With 1000+ babies, we tried replicating classic moral psychology finding that infants prefer helpful characters. But... babies chose randomly between helper/hinderer puppets:/
