Re: nostalgia for VHS tapes and other analog media, I saw someone say like "a VHS tape never sold my information to a nazi" and yes that's true! But the reason it's true is actually because Congress passed a law in 1988 specifically making it illegal for video stores to sell your rental history

Did you yell this at the ballpark?
I don't normally join dunking parties on here, but I feel the need to point out: this entire 'line' of accessories looks like complete ass.
The text would only look good on a protest sign, a placard. Not on a fan, a tie, and certainly not on a pocket square where it's all hidden!
People on the secular left love to rail against "Cultural Christianity" but few really, really want to stop and think about what that means.
This is, honestly, an underrated dynamic with a lot of these kinds of posters. A lot of ex-vangelicals who are now Marxist-Leninists, for instance, are people who grew up being taught liberals are the enemy and never grew out of it; they just shifted their rhetoric.
To me, this is blueskyism

This is the third op-ed I've seen this week, where some fuckwit pearl-clutches about how women are worse than the manosphere.
Where was all this animosity and outrage at the increasing radicalisation of men? At the discovery of massive social networks where they encourage each other to rape?
Oh don't worry, Sam, I am part of the problem.
Two lit red signs in a dim bar that say DRINK BOOZE.
Hey, bar, I'm trying.
Alas I'm on the bus now, not wearing it. Later though!
I kinda want to wear it as a topcoat. In these photos I'm wearing a suit beneath it. It's a larger size than I'd normally wear but it sort of works? I guess I want to know if I look like I'm wearing a bathrobe. :P I'd like to wear it right!
Okay, chat, I need some help here. My friend gifted me this Brooks Brothers thrift store find. It has a shawl collar, is made of wool and has interior suiting lining but no pockets. Is this a blazer? A topcoat? Ladies smoking jacket? Secret fourth thing?
Damn, she just like me, fr fr
If you make loads of money and you never intend to go back, there's some percentage in it (it's not a coincidence the ad you pointed to is from an estate business), but otherwise it's a huge pain in the ass, expensive, and also puts you on an American shitlist.
This is a very good use of time, *nod*
Would I do it? No, because I'd be stateless. :P
Strictly speaking, this kind of stuff is mostly targeted at wealthy people who want to dodge overseas tax liabilities. I've known citizens who want to leave the US, and people who've reconsidered immigrating here for work, but *renouncing* citizenship is extremely rare.
Bean, pull up, pull up! Abort!

Hegseth saying “The Pharisee Press” should be a fully mask off moment. He is saying “The Jewish Press”. But Christians of all political stripes are so devoted to using Pharisees as a rhetorical prop that liberal Christians regularly insist it’s totally fine, no matter how many Jews try to explain.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. If they could be whisked through the border, YVR is an easy-ish commute from Blaine. But YYZ... that's harder to imagine.
I admit, I've always been curious where the preclearance CBP officers actually come from. Do they live in Canada or commute every day from the US?
"Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair..."
It's a canary in the coalmine situation. The canary is not doing the work, but you'd much rather be in a situation where the canary is singing than flat on its back.
Speaker Johnson speaks at a podium. Text from a Common Dreams Article is above and below it. Headline reads: "In Dead of Night, Johnson Tries—But Fails—to Ram Through Domestic Spying Bill for Trump." Below is more text with one paragraph saying, '“Let me be clear,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) explaining her no vote in a statement. “There is no new warrant requirement in tonight’s amendment to FISA reauthorization. It does absolutely nothing to fix the massive loopholes in 702 collection that allow the government to spy on Americans without a warrant. It does nothing to fix the data broker loophole. And it slaps a 5-year extension on this bill so that this White House can continue to spy on Americans and violate our privacy rights for an even longer time.”'
In the middle of the night, Republican leadership tried to jam through legislation that allows the government to spy on Americans without a warrant.
I voted NO. We need serious privacy reform to protect the American people.

I definitely don't find this kind of stuff helpful. Now, this discourse is subject to the same issues with imposing ethical standards on the discourse you describe, but, yeah.
