I guess it really depends on your views on textual determinism, but in my view fans and fandom have as much effect shaping how we understand a character than the author’s original vision.
I think it’s a matter of fandom, Shaggy is a stoner the same way Kirk and Spock are gay. It doesn’t matter if they were written that way by their original creators, though some of the writers were definitely hinting at it. Stoner Shaggy is now intrinsically part of the characters canon!

A cornerstone of fascism is anti intellectualism. Destroying universities ability to shed light on the harm being done and replacing them with propaganda machines is an essential to fascism gaining a foothold!
This is a part of a concerted attack on academia. Making universities a hostile environment for minorities, cutting funding to arts and humanities and making it illegal to outlaw blatant bigotry will further weaken universities ability to criticise the status quo as we slide ever closer to fascism
This obviously makes students (especially minorities) unsafe. There are recorded incidents of these speakers doxing migrant students. And having speakers expounding on how some students “don’t deserve rights” harms mental health and makes students less likely to complete their studies!
The fact that the government is taking the complaints of these bigoted attention seekers seriously shows how far we’ve fallen. They aren’t academics, they have literally no reason to be given a platform, yet because they now represent the views of those in power they are given that platform!
Doing talks at universities designed to cause outrage has been part of the far-right playbook since the 1960s when American Nazi George Lincoln Rockwell did it. The point is to cause an outcry from progressive students and therefore get coverage and sympathy because the “evil students” were mean!
It's ironic because my ethics department was super fastidious about the potentiality of doxing and harassment for my project, simply because I'm studying the alt-right. But the fact that I’d be receiving harassment from my actual colleagues simply for existing as a trans person never mattered.
