Random thought: staying in a hotel for work is the adult equivalent of an overnight field trip

This is also how I flirt with women but so far it’s not working
I know the tweet is Al generated when they use " ," before and.
“I will NOT sacrifice the Oxford comma. We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They assimilate the em dash and we fall back. They capture ‘not just X but y’ and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!”
Got a message from someone asking for one of my deleted/hidden fics: yes, this is totally fine. If I wrote something that came down and you miss it, shoot me a message and I’ll send it to you (in most cases). I have my reasons for why I took a lot of stuff down, but I don’t mind sharing privately.
I’m in higher ed where it is even more true
“i was here for ao3 beta version” making me feel old because i’ve been reading fics before ao3 even existed
That’s so good to hear but I hope she takes all the time and space she needs — she deserved so much better than this.
Don't forget to get your badges, y'all.
This is what I was talking about with the AI witch-hunt thing last night, sigh. It’s so toxic and awful and unnecessary.
Screenshot of a Reddit post indicating that a work of fanfiction will not be finished.
Gutted because I’ve really been enjoying this particular ultra-popular fic with everyone else, but considering what’s been going on (and as someone who took a lot of stuff down not too long ago), I get it. It sucks, but I get it. Hope the author finds their joy again, for them.
That’s awesome! Congrats :)
I do worry that one of these days one of my past students or someone who’s attended one of my presentations will connect that me to here me and my soul will leave my body for a better world
RIGHT and even just using a grammar checker is enough to flag a piece of writing as AI even if the original construction is all you. It’s a huge equity issue that massively disadvantages non-native speakers and makes me want to kick the entire “detection” model in the shin. But that’s another story.
*hands back soapbox* sorry I’ve just been up to here with AI governance stuff IRL and nobody knows what they’re doing and it’s all so fucking dumb and I hate seeing that dumb bleed into fandom, anyway how are you guys
No but literally this is a HUGE and documented issue with academic integrity, the fact that ESL speakers/writers are disproportionately flagged with false identifications. Just to make the whole thing even grosser.
(FWIW my work has mostly been about taking a holistic skill-centered approach to scaffolding higher-order thinking skills as a pathway towards AI-resistant assessment. Yes, that is somehow connected to my new obsession with smutty hockey fanfiction, no I will not be taking questions at this time.)
Believe me, I fucking hate AI, too. I don’t want it anywhere near my writing or the work I consume. But seeing people being driven to delete work just because of accusations when I literally JUST gave a conference presentation on why that thought process doesn’t work… sigh. The frustration is real.
Yes, AI has “tells”. Yes, certain models have specific voices and tones that hit a certain way. But you literally cannot know for sure if someone used AI for their writing unless they disclose it. That’s where we are with the newer models and “humanizers,” and it blows but it’s the reality.
So there’s some kind of witchhunt happening with Heated Rivalry fic authors being accused of using AI by people who can “just tell” and as someone who’s been researching and presenting on this stuff statewide: no, you really can’t. That’s the problem, and randomly accusing people isn’t the answer.
I’m reading it now and I’m enjoying it a lot more than I expected to
My fellow writers might not want to hear this, but AI is a useful tool for certain aspects of the craft, like for instance when you’re engaged in the process of being a talentless shitbag hack who is too lazy to do any fucking writing.
The AI companies write in their T&C that their AI should only be used for entertainment purposes.
I don't know how they can make it clearer that you shouldn't use it for research or really anything other than a toy.
Happy birthday!!! 🥳

I love that I told @mandylorian.bsky.social she needs to watch Heated Rivalry and I’m obsessed now when both of us were primarily concerned about whether the hockey was accurate
(If any of you are writing fic 1) I want links 2) lmk if you need to learn hockey, I got you)
Just finished reading the gay hockey books and am finally getting to the show months late (spring break, first downtime I’ve had in… way too long), give me your fic recs please

AO3 comment. Transcribed text: “Hi. So I really love this fic and wanted to reread it last noght while ao3 was down. In the process I found out someone had listed it as a published book on goodreads. It looks like there isn’t an easy way to report listed books as errors, so I thought I’d let you know. Sorry. It’s a sign someone really loved this fic I imagine, but from other authors’ comments when this happened to them I assume it’s also frustrating and violating. Sorry again.”
I love when people enjoy my work but also appreciate this person giving me a heads-up about my fics being on GoodReads, which I do NOT love. There’s something gross about hobbyist work created for fun getting a star rating. No one signed up for that. Even if it’s meant as a compliment, please don’t.
