However, I have live all of my life in this country. I'm an American and I believe anyone who has lived most or all of their life here, regardless of status, is one as well.

Culturally I've been removed from California for so long I don't even know that Californians would recognize me as a Californian.

And yet I know damn well it doesn't matter how long I live in Texas no Texan will ever consider me a fellow Texan.

I still passively think of myself as Californian but am I really? Or am I Texan. Because logically, the idea of either is asinine.

I doubt I could navigate around where I used to live in any of the 5 cities that I lived in in California at this point, certainly not without gps.

For example I was born in California.

I spent 24 years in California, another 6 years in Nevada, and I've been in Texas for almost 20 years.

I have spent more of my life outside of California than I spent in California.

I wonder what the Venn diagram looks like of people who are ardently opposed to immigration and those who have never left the state in which they were born.

Because it occurs to me that people who have lived a considerable portion of their life outside of their birth state don't think like this.

And while I do not endorse term limits I do believe in this country we need to find a way to make the Boomers who refuse to fucking leave understand that there is a need for institutional memory but they don't have to be in control to be effective.

The easiest way to do that is to just pass a law that says individuals cannot receive campaign donations. All donations must be dropped into a general fund and all candidates are entitled to an equal share of that fund.

At that point, affiliation becomes irrelevant. It forces you to run on policy.

It is too $$$ for average ppl to run for office now, especially w/o party support and PAC money.

If you want to change the party from within and elect better candidates, we need to change the funding structure and kill Citizens United.

Personally I believe political parties need to be abolished entirely. It's one of the few principles of (some of) the founding fathers that I actually do agree with.

And don't twist that to mean I believe in the two-party system in the country. I do not. However it is the system we currently have and if you want to change it you have to do so within the parameters of that system bc we are not anarchists and you cannot govern from the extremes of either side.

Seems pretty self-explanatory but we can start with the idea of voting third-party at anything other than local level.

Purity politics are middle-class white people privilege because if (collective) you actually understand the concept of harm reduction you don't advocate third-party.

Not only do they not understand it, a lot of them will actively demonstrate how little they understand by very loudly demanding you vote for whatever niche politician they want.

They are the same people who continue to scream impeach Trump at the top of their fucking lungs.
