Currently sitting in the @academyhealth.bsky.social health equity interest group session. The panel is getting real about doing equity work in the current political climate, when this work is no longer sexy 🔥
“What we’re witnessing isn’t just the breakdown of systems, it’s the unraveling of the illusory foundations built on domination and extraction—revealing what was always unsustainable.”

If you’ve been following recent news about University of Minnesota public health researcher Dr. Rachel Hardeman harming junior scholars and plagiarizing their work, Hardeman’s ex-colleague, (my wife) Dr. Sirry Alang @profalang.bsky.social, made a statement. Here’s a quote with full statement below.
On Friday, I wrote this:

Yesterday, I had a call from someone I respect. It was a lecture on “piling on” & “throwing a respected colleague to the wolves…and for what?”
This nonsense kept me awake. Sharing what I’ve emailed them in case anyone else is pissed at me.
Black Maternal Health Week is a great time to:
-learn about the alarming care disparities faced by Black birthing people
-advocate for safer, culturally competent care
-$upport the organizations combatting care disparities
-$upport Black birthing people’s mutual aid
-work towards joyful experiences
I have a lot to say about this. But for now, I want to uplift the voices of new Black women scholars who have been harmed by my former colleague, collaborator and friend. We cannot inflict to others what universities inflict on us.
Will be a great event! Organized by our @iaphs.bsky.social Student Committee Webinar-Co Chairs: @elijahjwatson.bsky.social and Tianna Williams. A lot of trainees in Population Health Sciences are curious about opportunities outside of academia (especially now). This event will provide great info!

I urge everyone to #StandUpForScience, #publichealth, #maternalhealth and #infanthealth. This is a #calltoaction for reporters, the public, and all those who care about #justice, #humanity, and the right for mothers and infants thrive. 🪡
Funny how "erasing history" only applies to tearing down Confederate monuments, emphasizing the role of enslavement in the development of the U.S., & renaming military bases named after Confederates, but not to acknowledging historical Black, Brown, queer, and trans folks
Going to write with these folx later this week. Consider submitting your work. #HealthEquity home.liebertpub.com/publications...
"birth rate decline" discourse from fascists and eugenicists is really about "the wrong people are having babies."
The increased birth rates can be seen among women in my age cohort, who were more likely to have kids a little later- after completing their educations and establishing their careers.
If you’re feeling demoralized, know that psychological warfare is part of the enemy’s tactics and manage your PUBLIC response accordingly
It’s sad to see more and more programs pausing admissions. The intentional chaos and havoc of this current administration will affect the future of research.
“…This could be a golden era of resistance in terms of alternatives, if we choose to seize them, if we come out of our fear, if we come out of our shock, there is gonna be a tremendous amount of experimentation, because there’s gonna be millions of people…”

I comfort myself by reading about the Civil Rights Movement. It reminds me why I study what I do and that people working together to make the world better can sometimes win.
