Another tackling perf tip:

- Show a big FPS counter on screen ALL the time.
- Make it a little annoying to turn off.
- Have it turn yellow and then red as the fps drop.

Bonus points: smaller text showing gpu and cpu usage etc. to help easily pinpoint where the issue lies.
