#TwentyFiveYearsOfJerryLeeACelebration: Hour-long concert not great. Lewis has no spark from go, and even though he gets breaks, he comes back tired. Guests hit-or-miss. Johnny Cash just okay. Kris Kristofferson less than that. Dottie West lesser still. Oak Ridge Boys and Mickey Gilley win I guess?
HBO Guide ad reads: "There's a Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" when Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Mickey Gilley, the Oak Ridge Boys, Charlie Rich, Carl Perkins and Dottie West join Jerry Lee Lewis for a rousing concert celebrating "The Killer's" 25 years in show business. Musical highlights include: "Great Balls of Fire," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Help Me Make It Through the Night."

Lloyd Bacon's WINGS OF THE NAVY (1939).
I choose this not because of the film itself, but because it was the opening night film screened at Wilmington's Warner Theatre (02/08/1939).
Excerpts below are from my book, HISTORIC MOVIE THEATERS OF DELAWARE (The History Press, 2019).

#TheOdessaFile: In 1960s, German journalist obsessed w/avenging death (by suic*de) of WWII camp survivor by locating SS Captain responsible for killing the survivor's wife and 80,000 other Jews.
Entertaining despite straining credulity ... right up until a VERY late twist that is absolute bullshit.

#HollywoodViceSquad: So messy, you watch each part and try not to make sense of the whole.
(And don't expect something like STREETWALKIN'. The title here is grittier than the film itself.)
But the cast! Ronny Cox! Frank Gorshin! Leon Isaac Kennedy! Carrie Fisher! Robin Wright in her 1st feature!

#OneCrazySummer: Director Holland and star Cusack try to find some of that BETTER OFF DEAD magic in this cookie-cutter '80s class warfare comedy.
They did not find that magic.
Random moments are funny, but the overall execution is tired, and can't be saved by Cusack's charm or the silly animation.

Screengrab from The World, the Flesh and the Devil (Ranald MacDougall, 1959)
The earliest afrofuturist film that I know of is The World, the Flesh and the Devil (Ranald MacDougall, 1959) starring Harry Belafonte. It's an extremely unusual film about a nuclear apocalypse that also simultaneously attempts to address questions of racial politics post-integration.
very much worth a watch
