Aside from who started it, states like CA and VA putting a counter-gerrymander up to a referendum, where people are told and can make a decision on the context for why it's being done, has vastly more democratic legitimacy than state legislators rushing it through because they got bullied by POTUS.
In March, American consumers paid more for gas, but kept spending on the rest of the economy. They also haven't lowered their driving, and US gas supplies are still plentiful.

You cannot change bad laws if you are not in power. And it becomes near-impossible to be in power if the other side gerrymanders while you are not.
It's not the game we would like to play, but it is the game the GOP has made us have to play, if we ever want things to get better.

Susan Collins votes yes to proceed to the budget resolution, the first step in the process of giving ICE and CBP another $70 billion of funding.
I'll have a piece on this today. Two things to remember:
1) Rs are doing this *because* they want no oversight for ICE/CBP. They've refused all bipartisan reforms, so are going it alone w/out any reforms.
2) Opportunity cost. If we're spending $70 bn, it should go to HELPING people, not to DHS.

Text of the Senate GOP budget resolution is out. It calls for $70 bn more for DHS, to fund ICE and Border Patrol with no additional restraints through the end of Trump's term.
As expected, it does not call for offsetting cuts to the social safety net. Republicans are seeking those in a later bill.
I feel like it's poorly understood that Trumpism is *explicitly* about Trump and his allies getting to play by their own set of rules literally wherever possible
