In 1933, Germany's 525,000 Jews, less than 1% of the population, faced a harrowing dilemma: flee their homes or endure escalating persecution. Many clung to the hope that reason would prevail and the storm would pass. But by 1938, the ominous reality became undeniable. On October 5 of that year, the Reich Ministry of the Interior invalidated all German passports held by Jews, mandating their surrender. These documents were reissued only after being branded with a conspicuous red "J" for "Jude" (Jew), severely restricting their ability to escape (Kwiet, 2019). Fast forward to January 20, 2025. President Donald Trump signed an executive order causing the State Department to swiftly cease issuing passports with the correct gender markers and immediately halt issuing passports for trans, intersex, and nonbinary Americans. This abrupt policy shift has left many without accurate identification and restricted their ability to leave the country. Around 2.65% of the US population, or roughly 8.8 million Americans, is transgender, nonbinary, or intersex (USAFacts, 2023). In this volatile political landscape, where authoritarianism creeps forward and legal persecution escalates, the echoes of history grow louder. Many cling to the belief that the worst will not come, that the pendulum will swing back. But as before, escape routes vanish under the weight of bureaucracy, borders tighten, and hesitation could become a death sentence.
