When I was a NASA scientis I had the chance to visit Japan. I was Deputy Project Scientist on a joint NASA - Japanese Space Agency mission called GPM. Very interesting place, long A flight though. Anyhow, climate is changing so much that the Japanese just invented a new word for the hottest of days.
My deep dive on the current U.S. drought and what's next for all of us.

Few things in weather grab our attention quite like lightning. It’s fast, powerful, a little bit mysterious — and for this week’s guest, it’s been a lifelong fascination! ⚡️
Hear from Chris Vagasky in our latest episode of Weather Geeks 👉 linktr.ee/WeatherGeeks
One of our lightning detection satellites saw Orion re-enter Earth Atmosphere. My explanation

Will the weather hinder the scheduled Friday splashdown of Orion and the Artemis II astronauts? I explain the criteria and forecast in some early morning writing.

Dose of reality
Cat whiskers are amazing and possible weather instruments too. My discussion in Forbes inspired by an observation last night of our own cat.

And my article says "could" not "will" to reflect uncertainty
Again. I defer to Noaa CPC not social media. I link to their Apr 6 briefing in the article which follows the logic. I link to @bhensonweather.bsky.social article also for details on what the European model shows. Time will tell
Isolated..as noted in the article the models are in consensus and far better than they were 12 years ago...so I defer to the experts at CPC
Great perspective of what we can see in this image. Thank you, Dr. Shepherd!
On this Easter Sunday and reflecting on humanity, this now iconic picture of Earth from Orion astronaut Reid Wiseman inspired my writing today on 7 hidden science lessons in it and message of hope

"By the way, here’s the breaking news for some folks. They didn’t levitate there or get transported by the moon fairy." --Dr. Marshall Shepherd
Discussing reflectors left on the moon for laser studies ongoing today

Astronaut Ron Wiseman took this picture as they head to the moon with Artemis. All of us are on that right now....Think about that.....
The Artemis II mission will likely bring wacky conspiracy theories about Moon landing back to the surface. There is a compelling piece of evidence often overlooked. My discussion.

Ok you probably saw that NASA launched the #Artemis II mission last evening. Now that it has launched, here is my discussion as a former NASA scientist on 5 facts about this 10-day mission to the moon.

Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmo, and Earth Science's Bruce Albrecht talks about how his app is bringing weather geeks and casual sky-watchers together one snapshot at a time 👉 linktr.ee/WeatherGeeks
You are going to hear a lot about #Artemis today. I wrote this when it was originally going to launch a few months ago but was scrubbed. They try again tonight. This a 101 on the mission

Meteorology is entering a “golden age," but communication is just as crucial as the forecast. 🌎🌦️
On #WorldMeteorologicalDay, #NASmember J. Marshall Shepherd (@drshepherd2013.bsky.social) reflects on AI, climate risk & why science must reach beyond the ivory tower: www.nasonline.org/news/meteoro...
Honored to be featured in this Q&A spotlignt by National Academy of Sciences www.nasonline.org/news/meteoro...
As one of University of Georgia's members of the National Academy, we have a strong atmospheric sciences research, service, and instruction, so it is important to have pulse on the moment.
My article on the oppressive heat gripping much of the U.S., and how it is shattering records. I discuss how it impacted March Madness games Iowa vs Virginia and Iowa vs Fairleigh in Iowa City. You won't believe what temperatures were on the court.

Ok I had enough so had to write this. That privacy notice with statement about 60 Minutes is a hoax. It is a reincarnation of something that has been around for years. I deal with this in a quick morning article......Pleaaaaaaaaseeeee read and share
