Fascists and would-be fascists divide us — turning neighbors into enemies to secure their own power. The toll on our mental health is profound.

Major theme in so many conversations I've had these past few weeks:

Michael Edison Hayden — Strange People on the Hill: How Extremism Tore Apart a Small American Town - with Jared Holt — at Conn Ave A gripping story that reveals what happened to a small American town when an influential white nationalist group relocated its headquarters there, illustrating how radical changes in American politics impact our psyches and divide our communities When the white nationalist group VDARE used dark money to purchase a historic castle overlooking Berkeley Springs in West Virginia, America’s “cold civil war” spilled into this scenic tourist town. From behind the imposing stone walls of their castle, VDARE’s Peter and Lydia Brimelow spread propaganda focused on the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, sowing discord in the once-peaceful town below. In an attempt to restore civility, a group of neighbors banded together to oppose VDARE’s presence in Berkeley Springs. Strange People on the Hill urgently demonstrates how extreme reactionary ideology and the national politics that embody it disrupt the lives of everyday Americans while highlighting the intimate relationship between violent, racist radicalism and what now passes for mainstream conservatism. Through extensive on-the-ground reporting, renowned researcher and investigative reporter Michael Edison Hayden shows how the politicized culture wars manifest in deeply personal dramas and conflicts in a moving narrative about how the people of Berkeley Springs are bravely standing up against hate and division and forging a community built on inclusivity, respect, and neighborliness.

Michael Edison Hayden @michaelehayden.bsky.social will be speaking about his new book, Strange People on the Hill, at @politicsprose.bsky.social in Washington D.C. on Saturday April 11! politics-prose.com/michael-edis...

2026 Stepanski Family Lecture featuring Lisa Graves - Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College Roosevelt House is pleased to present a discussion featuring legal expert Lisa Graves on her book, Without Precedent: How Chief Justice Roberts and His Accomplices Rewrote the Constitution and Dismantled Our Rights. “A devastating, passionate takedown of Chief Justice John Roberts’s Supreme Court by a Washington insider,” according to journalist Jane Mayer, Without Precedent seeks to reveal Roberts’s role in the “rightward” transformation of what Graves calls the most corrupt, and corrupted, Supreme Court in American history. The author will be in conversation with longtime New York Times editorial board member and legal affairs journalist, Roosevelt House advisory board member Dorothy Samuels. The third Stepanski Family Lecture at Roosevelt House, this discussion will consider the machinations behind some of the U.S. Supreme Court’s most controversial decisions over the last two decades—including the decisions to curtail voting rights, undermine anti-corruption measures, encourage political gerrymandering, restrict the regulation of guns, and end the constitutional right to control one’s reproductive choices. As Graves so convincingly argues, these rulings are part of a transformation that was orchestrated—not by a fair-minded institutionalist, as Roberts is often made out to be—but by “a billionaire-backed reactionary political movement,” whose interests Roberts has been all too willing to serve. As previous Stepanski Family Lecturer and Senator from Rhode Island Sheldon Whitehouse has said, “Lisa Graves is a dazzlingly brilliant sleuth of the dark-money apparatus that has corrupted the Supreme Court.” Informed by her experience working on judicial issues for all three branches of the federal government, and based on years of intensive research, Without Precedent seeks not only to expose Justice Roberts as a “reactionary politician in robes,” but to deliver a vigorous plan of judicial reform that she believes would end the divisive, anti-democratic inclinations of the Roberts court.

Lisa Graves will discuss her book, Without Precedent, with Dorothy Samuels for the 2026 Stepanski Family Lecture at Hunter College's Roosevelt House. RSVP to attend in person or watch online here:
