While looking for ticks at one of our long-term monitoring sites in northern Maine, one of our students encountered clusters of winter tick larvae. Winter ticks pose a serious threat to Maine's iconic moose population, with infestations reaching over 100,000 ticks on a single moose in some cases.

We took a look at the differences in tick infestation and pathogen prevalence between the white-footed mouse and deer mouse in Maine. We also developed a novel multiplex assay for distinguishing between these two species while testing for tick-borne pathogens.
