If think about it, Lupin is the most unpleasant opponent of his gang. Unlike his partners, who would kill you at best, he can destroy your life in a couple of hours as punishment for playing dirty.

Secondly, Raphail was a member of the Punishers, who eliminated both demons and humans. And for Max, a lover of humanity and having demon as friends, that's a red flag. (He doesn't know that Raph left immediately after the war)
