It’s next week!!! Mark your calendars!! #Classicsblusky#Blueskyclassics #AncientBlueSky
This online series of meetings brings together scholars & practitioners from both hemispheres to discuss the stories of ancient historical & fictional women who inspire them & their work. We invite speakers to problematise the concept of what a 'strong' woman means to them, & how our ideas about the position & roles of women, gender & female agency have evolved over time. In turn this affects how we receive, interact with & adapt these ancient female figures & their stories. Each speaker will reflect on their chosen ancient woman/women or group, as a launchpad for a wider examination of the impact of ancient women in recent scholarship &/or in a variety of modern media (including but not limited to the stage, screen & the visual arts). Speakers can choose to focus on the ancient material but must engage with recent scholarly debates on questions of gender, &/or diversity. Practitioners are particularly welcome to present their creative receptions of these ancient female figures, partnering up with a scholar or by themselves with a scholar as a respondent to foster dialogue & the exchange of ideas. We welcome proposals from interested scholars, postgraduates & practitioners (a title & a short abstract of 200-300 words) by 6th of January. Collaborations between researchers & between scholars & practitioners are most welcome. Since our goal is to bring together people from both hemispheres, we aim to preserve a balance in terms of numbers between northern & southern speakers. We envisage a seminar series of between 10 & 12 speakers, with around 2 speakers, plus a chair/respondent per session. Dates & times to be decided after the selection of abstracts has been completed.

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel that some people feel a bit too fine about this…

“And I think she ought to be celebrating the fact that I’m capable of participating in an hour-long discussion without shoe-horning in Thucydides…”. I need some tips for this… Great entry! Thank you!
Terrible news from our colleagues at @antrelclaottawa.bsky.social. We will continue to boost their updates.

That if academia and the humanities still exist…
I will write to you later on. Thank you so much!
I am deeply sorry for not reading you, I’m sure it would have enriched my paper.
Doing science in Argentina is hard, and under those circumstances were even harder. I contacted medievalists there who put me in contact with others who helped me with the bibliography. I knew there was a ned book edition of Moerbeke but I didn’t know anyone who had it nor my library had it.
I have no idea who the reviewers were, but that would have been helpful, indeed. This paper was difficult for me because I’m a classical philologist and my aim was beyond Moerbeke itself. And I wrote this mainly during lockdown (in Argentina it lasted two years).
I am sorry. I will look it up. Thank you!
A new edition of the fragments of ‘Anonymus Iamblichi’, fresh off the CUP
Unboxing day! Thanks to all the many people who helped along the way. I hope it’ll generate some interest in these fascinating fragments. Among other things they’re about a people’s own responsibility for preserving its democracy. So not entirely irrelevant for our current moment.
Pinch me, @degruyterbrill.bsky.social has published an article of mine in the journal #Polis on the medieval reception of Aristotle and its influence in our modern concept of #demagoguery
