I had this moment a couple years ago when deciding what I wanted to do for grad school. Your book A City on Mars pushed me towards something less space focused and more Earth focused. It's a privilege to be able to choose, but it's scary because what if I chose wrong?

It's a very sobering but focusing realization. I want to spend my life doing the things that computers truly find hard: being around people, doing physical activity, making art, appreciating life, the universe and everything, and being a good person.

I am made out of meat. Why on Earth would I think I can code better than a computer?

Context: Claude ran for an hour and rewrote the type library for my compiler. Initial output: 90% of my skill. After my review: 110% of my skill. Is paying my salary for my judgement worth it for that extra 20%?

Scientists no Longer Find Twitter Professionally Useful, and have Switched to Bluesky Synopsis. Social media has become widely used by the scientific community for a variety of professional uses, including networking and public outreach. For

Bluesky is the new science Twitter, new study by @whysharksmatter.bsky.social and Julia Wester concludes!

"Results show that for every reported professional benefit that scientists once gained from Twitter, scientists can now gain that benefit more effectively on Bluesky than on Twitter."

I think a city on the moon might be even more destabilizing for the nuclear detente. A first strike from the moon might be able to destroy all launchpads from which retaliation is possible. I guess it's still stable as long as the lunar nation has an earthly presence it doesn't want to get nuked.

#PPOD: This very impressive, and little-known, image of a meandering squiggle of high-altitude clouds on Saturn was captured by the Cassini spacecraft on July 18, 2010. It almost looks like one of these fancy latte art designs! Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SSI/CICLOPS / @jpmajor.bsky.social 🧪 🔭

In hindsight, it will be an anomaly that the most powerful people still depended on fellow humans for the labor that makes them powerful. We’re lucky that they still need us, because it gives us power over them, albeit dispersed.

Trump administration plans to break up largest federal climate research center Russ Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, said the National Science Foundation "will be breaking up" the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado.

“NCAR has played a greater role in advancing weather prediction & atmospheric modeling than perhaps any other single entity in the world,” says @weatherwest.bsky.social

Dismantling NCAR would be “like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.” KH

For what it's worth, you're definitely my favorite cartoonist. I relate to your jokes! Also loved your book on Mars.

Gradio Build & Share Delightful Machine Learning Apps

You know, if you're looking to build a GUI in Python I'd recommend www.gradio.app

It's simpler to use and looks better than TKinter. The GUI is also a website instead of a desktop app, which can be handy to share it with people.
