You gonna build that coalition of disparate people working to achieve a common goal or are you going to continue to hold people to a purity test only you and five other people on a mastodon instance can pass?

Oh I see. Only four can pass it now.

8 years ago I made this NES game called Lizard. I never know how to describe it... a quiet game of exploration, with a little bit of difficulty, a little bit of mystery. It was a kind of game I wanted to see more of, and I still look at it fondly.

oh cool I found that unraid has a feature for bulk transfers, Turbo Write, that I can turn on just for this scenario. Maybe less than a week now!

anyway this is why my plex server will be down for another week or so as I have 30tb of data to copy over still.

had I not made any changes to the files I could have just initiated another rsync to replace the lost ones, but since I did I had to scrap the whole thing and start over. This time I did the smart thing and set up parity drives (after I had moved data off them), but now file transfers are slower duh

4 days ago 0 0 1 0

So I copied all the files over to the new array sans parity, made a bunch of changes to a ton of files, then spun down my old plex instance, moved the primary drives to the new server, and was getting ready to erase them and add them into the array when the SMR drive ate shit and wouldn't mount.

4 days ago 0 0 1 0

The second mistake was making a bunch of changes to the files and their organization, a task I had wanted to do for a while, on the array before building parity.

The third mistake was keeping a SMR drive in the array

4 days ago 0 0 1 0

but in order to build my array I had to pull all the mirror drives from the old server, build the array in unraid, then transfer the files over. My first mistake was trying to speed that up and not setting up a parity drive right away.

there's also the advantage that with unraid, if I do end up losing a drive with data on it and can't recover with parity, it doesn't poison the whole pool as files are logically spread across drives and are readable outside of the system.

answered further on, but with unraid I can build one array with a bunch of drives of different capacity and freely add to it one drive at a time as needed. TrueNAS only lets you build pools of drives if they're the same exact size.

truenas expects you to have drives of the exact same capacity to build pools, something that I don't have but also lack the financial capability to build at this moment.

it also meant we had six+ different shares. With drive prices the way they are in 2026 none of that is viable any more. So after some research I found Unraid would let me pool drives of different capacities into one large array with only needing two parity drives, something I can't do with truenas

4 days ago 0 0 1 0

we eventually built the current old server and used zfs mirrors for each drive for data redundancy, but that meant that every time we needed to expand the storage we'd have to buy two matching drives, doubling the price, and would also have to replace dead drives with exact copies

I moved that server to just a windows machine that for a time used windows homegroup which was not nearly as convenient, ruined a ton of files with non-euclidean file permissions that grafted themselves onto the files as I built new servers, and flat out refused to work when gravis moved in

WHS was yet another microsoft product that was far ahead of its time and could have positioned MS as a market leader had they kept up with it, but instead they folded immediately at the first sign of trouble and never touched the idea again

4 days ago 2 0 1 0

thinking back to my first real server, a windows home server I built from scratch (you had to fight tooth and nail to be able to purchase an OEM license. I still have it). Of course I lost a bunch of data to it but at the time it felt magical with its integration with Vista

4 days ago 3 0 1 0

one day I will lose it all and it will both be immediately freeing but also possibly cause me to die on the spot

4 days ago 1 0 0 0

despite all the set backs on the new server so far, Unraid has been a delight. The only problem I've had was caused by the way I have to shuffle drives from the old server into the new one and being impatient about it.

4 days ago 1 0 2 1

of course when you have parity drives your file transfer speeds will halve. It's only 30tb of data, how long could that take?

No Goblin trivia: we decided at the very start we would have the team saying the studio name when you open one of our games. For our first two titles it was just me and Dan, but now it is the most beautiful sound I ever heard in my life of our whole team yelling in joy (also my goofy ass kid lol)
