A new report from @reutersinstitute.bsky.social revealed that, for the first time ever, social media is America's #1 news source.
I wrote about what this means for #publicrelations professionals navigating an increasingly decentralized media environment.

Business Insider just laid off 21% of its staff. I wrote about what this means for the PR industry.

In my view, people are largely put off by these "AI-first" announcements from brands like #Duolingo and #Shopify because of empathy. That, also in my view, is a good thing.

Inquiring minds want to know: Are we hurtling toward the realization of the dead internet theory? Or, is the social media market simply going to correct itself—especially as federated platforms like BlueSky are on the rise and Tumblr is making a comeback?

Today we got a great new litmus test for tone deafness: While economic distress (putting it lightly) and fear dominate the headlines, Katy Perry wants you to know that you can watch a livestream of her trip to space—in full "glam."
CEOs: A cloud of tariff doom is hanging over the US today. This is your reminder that marketing is not a cost center. Take your brand 'off-air' in a downturn, and you risk 2% of long-term revenue quarterly. It can take <5 years to recover lost equity when the economy rebounds (it will). Don't do it.
I just need to say how awesome the #IndustrialMarketingSummit was for the LANC team. We met so many great people and soaked up *all* the insights.
Leaving Austin today, we feel even more empowered in our pursuit of excellence for our clients in strategic communications and PR.

It’s scary how good Jake Hall’s “millennial” brand is. He’s here talking about manufacturing with little “The Office” Easter eggs sprinkled throughout his presentation. It makes the millennial in me cringe and feel seen.

Senior leadership must be visible and engaged in company culture and values and, by extension, external communications that articulate those things. Failure to do so causes a breakdown across the brand, stalling growth.
Great session from Jim Mayer at the #IndustrialMarketingSummit yesterday.
Not Slack being down when my client needs to use it for a demo during a webinar today. A webinar with the most registrants they've ever gotten... 🫠
Slack is down! Now's our chance. Boot up AOL Instant Messenger and tell everyone this is the new chat. Come on people we've been training for this
Startups and PR agencies don't always see eye-to-eye on payment. Startups want to pay for results, but PR agencies want to work on retainers.
I wrote about some alternatives to retainers for startups here: lancmarketing.com/blog/startup...

Subscribed. Independent journalism gives me hope.
It's heartening to see people genuinely sharing their cultures and experiences and connecting on the things they find interesting—AKA the whole point of social media. People are sick of ads, rage bait, and fake content, and the arrogance of the owners of these platforms just adds insult to injury.
I don't know how many of y'all are watching the migration of American TikTokers to RedNote, but it's the most fascinating thing I've EVER SEEN HAPPEN ONLINE.

Today marks two years alcohol-free for me. So, I'm resurfacing the article I wrote for @businessinsider.com about sober travel. If you're #sobercurious, the new year is a great time to think about how drinking may be holding you back.

My team recently helped our friend Aileen Wigotow, CPA, owner of Friday Financials, get coverage in an article from Business.com.

A #PRAgency sent embargoed news from a client asking me to cover them for @businessinsider.com. Not only had I not agreed to the embargo... I'm not even a regular contributor in the first place! And I'm a competitor!
This is why reporters hate PR people and clients don't trust agencies. Do better.
Great agency owners have one thing in common: They know that keeping good clients for years is the key to success—not just winning new accounts.
In this #AgencyEdit, I talk with the "Gift Box Lady" about the role that corporate gifting plays in client retention.

I don't work 60+ hour weeks and neither does my team. I have a wonderful fiancé, a dog, hobbies, family, and friends who are an active part of my everyday life, and vice versa. Personally, I think it's time to put the "agencies = no work life balance" myth to rest.

I don't believe this to be true. We have a lot of projects to juggle, and it can be stressful at times. But I enjoy working with my clients, and each day brings something new. Without sharing the gory details, in-house roles can be even more consuming than agency work in my experience.
I'm a frequent lurker on PR and marketing subreddits, and a common misconception I've seen is that "agencies have no work-life balance." 🧵
Thank you so much!
Thank you!

On 11/16, I ran my first road marathon in Richmond and qualified for Boston in 3:23:08. It wasn't easy training for a marathon while running my small agency. This is a great reminder that hard work pays off.
