I guess a last note is to be picky with who you get really close with. Good relationships come from time and deeper understanding. While its hard when you feel lonely and unsupported, choosing the wrong people will make it harder to find the right support group for you.

All of this is to say, its hard, but possible. This is simply what i found works for me. And ofc it kind of depends on your opportunities, but I live in the butt fuck nowhere of Montana!! Haha!! So anything is possible. I bet you there’s a game shop nearby that hosts game nights even!!

Online, I just started hanging out in Discord servers of artists I like. Honestly? Just do your own thing! People are drawn to you when you’re just making cool art for yourself or just hanging out. Networking is a muscle - it feels awkward at first, but it gets so much easier the more you flex it.

You really do get back what you put in. I wanted more people to suit with and draw with and do stuff with. So i kept asking and trying to do those things. I think the hardest part about finding a community is just time. I started over with covid and it’s only been about 4 years… but it works!

I think the local queer community also is a great opportunity to meet people. Drag events, pride month ect…
Furries are also a huge opportunity. They *want* to hangout with other people. Years ago i first started by going to boba and inviting people to come draw with me.

I started hitting up local art events, clothing swaps, and even random campus stuff I wasn’t that into. As long as it was free and tangentially related to something I like, I would go. It’s nerve-wracking, but I met so many people! Even just going to farmers markets or art walks helped me.

Oh what I wouldn't give to just be a little animal soaking up the sun and not in charge of a bunch of humans and stressed out of my mind.
