We have wonderful exceptions like @dairinstitute.bsky.social and few others, so to add ETCH to that list of wonderful non profits whose mission is to humans and a more ethical and accountable future, feels great!
Exciting and good news from the Glaze/Nightshade UChicago team!
They are releasing a new non-profit, ETCH, whose mission is specifically to assist and prioritize humans in this GenAi era!
One of the first public releases of ETCH is Quicksilver, an solid GenAi detector for music!
Cremnitz White for warmer brightening of tones and warm whites, titanium white for cooler brightening of tones and cool yet insanely intense whites.
Rembrandt’s transparent oxide brown is my MVP.

For now here are some things I’ve learned this round:
Scrape if you dont like something. Painting things in one sitting feels nice and fresh but you gotta plan accordingly.
Round brushes and Fan brushes, I finally understand and love you.

Yup. Still blows my mind that a wildly profitable company, can’t be bothered to pay the handful of artists who gave that same company 10-15 years of some of the most successful, lasting and best designs in the industry.
The lack of loyalty and respect by the people who do the least is staggering.

This is something I wish to see change via legislation. Companies being so restrictive of portfolio pieces long after a project is released.
It limits hype for projects, while also keeping workers in the shadows.
They really shouldn’t have power over workers who just want to share their labor.
Another part of Marvel shutting down the Visual Development Team is that Marvel got extremely restrictive of the work the team could show AFTER a project was released.
So this brilliant team could barely show and advertise the work they did. Making a layoff like this even worse.
Also…goddamn am I so honored to have worked with all those amazing artists in that team for almost 9 years.
Each and every one of you are just incredible. I know you’ll all land on your feet, and eventually make others feel so lucky to be able to work with you.
Can’t believe the news, Disney shutting down the marvel. vis dev department. This teams art made them billions and billions of dollars, but it seems that paying a handful or so of fulltime illustrators is simply too much to ask these days.
But I know these are brilliant people who will land on their feet. I hope whatever is next for them is worthy of them. Even better if its them pursuing their own projects and making bank off of that!
These folks through their designs made Marvel and Disney so much profit, via films, merchandise and toys…
You’d think a company would ensure these folks would be set for life yet all they got was a thank you for your service, a severance package and see ya later.

Which is wild as Andy is a staple!
Andy was responsible for the visual direction of the Guardian of the Galaxy movies, the designs of Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Shang-Chi, latest Thor, and so much more!
Every single member of that team has contributed SO much to the behemoth that is the MCU.
Every character, environment, monster, prop, you ever saw on screen, from Rocket Racoon to the Avengers, was first made by someone at that Visual Development team!
An immense loss to the industry.
Here’s just ONE of the artists Marvel Studios let go today:
Wesley Burt, a brilliant veteran, one of the best in the industry. He made the viral Fantastic Four Valentine’s day card!
He was also pivotal for the look of many films and shows like for example Loki, Black Panther, Avengers and so on!
I’m gonna wait and see on that. Its too early to tell. I’ve seen too many companies claim its not about “Genai” when laying people off, to then come back and quietly use GenAI to make up for the teams lost.
And this is a REALLY important team to the Marvel Studios pipeline. So…yeah. Gonna wait.
Yup. Exactly this. It was literally THE TEAM that built their whole brand identity.
Also screw wealthy CEO’s and corporations laying off the very people that made them wildly successful, just for short term gains.
Folks with institutional knowledge, with decades of work, dedication and success all dismissed.
For what? Who knows but it’ll make a great bonus for an exec.
