The American Century of Humiliation is here baby. We're gonna be driving old cars breaking down like Cuba while the rest of the world has EVs and gets car check ups like once every 5 years.

Some of the new stuff getting built now will someday be viewed as iconic. Some will be seen as ugly and will get replaced over time. This is just how it goes and is fine. I do agree that overengineering the aesthetics in the code constrains creativity and has unintended consequences.

Yeah, this does not hold up. There’s a long history of people hating new architectural styles or specific buildings we now view as iconic and beloved when they first appeared. NIMBYs might point to style when justifying their opposition, but it’s an excuse like any other. Also, beauty is subjective!

The $580 million short oil bet was the smaller of the two insider trades. The larger one, placed at the exact same time (6:49-6:50am), was between $1.4-$1.9 billion to go long S&P 500 e-Mini futures.

Over $2 billion in Trump traitor trades, all wildly profitable 15 minutes later after Trump's post.

2/ false claims of the President of the United States that there's a totally new plan and things are about to become awesome again. Whatever the intent, it's practically an ATM machine now for market gaming.

As time has gone on I've realized there is a still quite small but now non-trivial chance that the entire Iran War is simply an insider trading operation, creating repeated black swan moments and relying on markets continued willingness to gyrate wildly in the face of absurd and predictably ...

San Francisco is a lovely place to live and we should build more homes so that people can make their lives here.

Roberts Courts legacy is to make it harder for ordinary people to engage in the most basic form of participation (voting), for that participation to matter (letting gerrymandering stand), while removing any constraints from billionaire influence on politics

This is at best a distraction from policies that would actually help bring down the cost of housing, and at worst will keep single-family neighborhoods income-segregated by locking out more renters.

How To Delay Affordable Senior Housing in SF, Despite a Law That Blocks Appeals Bernal Heights neighbors demanded and got a smaller building. Now they say it shouldn’t cut a private park in half. This wasn’t meant to happen.

The groups and individuals in California that are fighting to block more housing production—many of whom claim to be fighting for progressive values—seem intent on delivering the White House to JD Vance.

From @jerusalem.bsky.social: “The problem for elites who wish to silo their politics in the realm of pure economics is that it is not actually possible to cleave the “rule of law when it comes to dealing with protesters” away from the “rule of law that enforces contracts.”

Lessons from YIMBYism: Taking “Abundance” Back to Its Fundamentals Lessons from YIMBYism examines how supply-side reforms, public investment, and state capacity can make progressive social policy work as intended.

First: Supply matters. To decarbonize, you need green energy infrastructure. For universal health care, you need a lot of doctors. And you can't buy your way out of supply constraints solely through subsidies. You need subsidy *and* increased supply. rooseveltinstitute.org/publications...

America has a housing shortage. Every single housing proposal you see that is not "build more housing" will have the primary effect of pushing up the prices of existing housing, and is therefore, in reality, a plan to enrich current homeowners. In conclusion, build more housing.

Simply getting the state to socialize all that risk is not an alternative to substantially reducing the risk. If you do the former without the latter, you're basically hamstringing the state and penalizing low-income Californians who live outside the WUI.
