Critical Hurricane Forecast Tool Abruptly Terminated U.S. Department of Defense announced Tuesday it would no longer process and deliver data essential to most hurricane forecasts

A huge blow was dealt to hurricane forecasters this week as a critical tool was abruptly terminated by the Department of Defense and NOAA. The immediate discontinuation of data from three weather satellites will severely impact hurricane forecasts this season and beyond. More ⬇️

I’m gonna say something that is going to sound crazy, but when has that ever stopped me from saying something publicly: there is a way in which the U.S. chucking its position in the world could actually fast-track energy transition. A few things that have me thinking this way 🧵

What we know about the victims killed in the California wildfires At least 25 people have died across the Los Angeles area. Officials have said the true death toll isn't known as the fires continue to burn.

It is striking, tragic and not at all coincidental that so many of the people who died in the L.A. fires were disabled and/or elderly — two groups that are horrifically vulnerable during disasters. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

I was a grad student when the 2007 IPCC report came out, the two highest emissions pathways predicted warming of 3.4 or 4 degrees. "A bit less than 3C" is still too high, but thanks to activists, scientists, and policymakers we have brought the number down. Our climate future is still being written.

Saudi set to host winter World Cup in 2034 Saudi Arabia is set to stage a winter World Cup in 2034 after a FIFA evaluation report highlighted the likelihood of the competition being played "between October-April."

Global warming powerhouse Saudi Arabia may disruptively hold 2034 soccer World Cup in winter because of what FIFA called "elevated risk" of "local climate conditions" — as in, certainty of worsening health dangers from climate change in one of world's hottest countries. www.espn.com/soccer/story...

More than 100 wildfires still not considered out after B.C.'s record wildfire season While it's not uncommon for some fires to burn through the winter, that number usually hovers around a couple dozen, not the 106 that were listed as active on New Year's Day.

Despite it being winter, ~100 of those smoky Canadian wildfires are still burning. "The dry conditions mean the fires burn deep into the ground, particularly in the peat or bog-like conditions that exist in the northeast." www.coastreporter.net/national-new...

A big takeaway for me from this story is that if you're going to be reporting on conflicts between offshore wind and fishing fleets, it's important to also report on the impacts of ocean warming that the new turbines will help ease.

And look to cover solutions, not just photogenic fishing captains.
