Basic fish is real (though badly pickled) but the baby is an AI addition… 🙄

I guess that is not meant to be an Artemis shot but just a bathymetry map from a certain perspective. I was confused by the header…

That is a great perspective but… how is there not a single cloud in sight? 🤔 I can’t find the original pic from NASA.

🙀I can’t believe that is real…but it is! 🧪

Three examples of radiolaria found in shallow tropical waters. The one on the left has a central capsule and multicolored "tentacles"; the one in the middle is a long tube, and the one on the right is a cloud around a central capsule.

Don't jump on me for this, but ... from the "waist" up, it is a good match for a polycystine radiolarian (e.g.,Collozoum). They can have capsules at the bulbous end, and sometimes the other end collapses to form "tentacles". I'm sure you see rads all the time though..?

Just when you thought one couldn't revolutionize typography, Riley and the Lettermatic team blow your mind! Nearly 750,000 glyphs! But my favorite is Texture Healing. Check it out!

There are mysteries just below the surface there. :^) I would have been so excited as a kid to come across your team doing surveys! I

Mine is straight also. I don’t think the periscope was out back when we got ours either. I should redo some tidepool fluorescence shots with it, and give it another chance. Thanks for the encouragement.

I got one of those Laowa probes thinking I could use it to look inside jellyfish, but I haven’t found a good situation to use it.

The Ocean Legacy of National Geographic Explorer Dr. Tierney Thys In Memoriam

The ocean and all who love it lost an inspiring advocate with the passing this week of Tierney Thys. She brought such joy to the work of protecting and restoring our blue planet. This wonderful tribute from Danielle Thys captures her spirit so beautifully: bit.ly/4s4hVq6

When you zoom out from individual genes to consider the context of whole chromosomes across animal diversity, animal evolution takes on a different look. Oleg Simakov and I published a review in @annualreviews.bsky.social on topological approaches in comparative genomics. 🧬 doi.org/10.1146/annu...

Gigantocypris is always a crowd-pleaser, but I have never seen those black amphipods!

Related to high pressure, @ibudin.bsky.social and Jacob Winnikoff led a study which showed that a particular lipid headgroup (PPE) is more abundant in membranes of deep #ctenophores. 🧪🦑
What was amazing was when they put PPE into bacterial membranes, the bacteria became more pressure tolerant!
