Why do corporate PR people insist on only sending comments at the very last minute before my deadline? Do they think it will somehow delay the story? Is it some kind of power trip?

You can also see the lie of this being about "health" given that the administration is at the same time is trying to cut fruit and vegetable benefits from WIC www.cbpp.org/blog/for-sec...
A mom and widow who had benefits cut because of a mistake on a form. A home health aid making $13/hour who said food pantries are so overwhelmed, they couldn't help. A student who said SNAP access supported eating disorder recovery.
My reporting for @slate.com & @economichardship.bsky.social:
That to me implies he's decided not to have kids at all. I don't know what his plans are!
For so long childcare was a "women's issue," just about moms. Then men started taking it up, but often as fathers. Now it's a mainstream reality that universal childcare will benefit everyone in the long run. We all started as kids! And today's kids will be future grown ups.
Beyond it being exciting to see an important policy being made real in NYC, the other groundbreaking thing about Mamdani loudly and doggedly supporting universal childcare is that it's not coming from a woman or even a parent. It's being championed by a childless man.
This article frames the Republican push to limit what people can buy with food stamps as part of RFK's agenda but in reality this has long been a conservative goal and it's always been about punishing the poor, not about health www.washingtonpost.com/health/2026/...

Some evidence for the theory that undoing the pandemic-era safety net was at least one cause of the vibecession
Hope you'll spend some time w/ this incredible piece by @jazzmyth.bsky.social. It reveals how the underfunded system set up to protect domestic violence survivors is unraveling under immense strain. Expertly done & w/ a lot of heart, told through the eyes of a survivor.

Courts keep saying this and yet here's the EEOC, the federal agency tasked with protecting Americans from employment discrimination, denying that trans people are protected or that they even exist www.thenation.com/article/soci...
“Vought la[id] out his belief that the money Congress appropriates each year is to set a topline limit.” That is not what it says in the constitution my man!
Really good example here as to how Vought (and Republicans) lie about fraud in Medicaid and SNAP, while completely ignoring $725 billion in annual tax fraud (which is ~total federal spending on Medicaid and SNAP annually).
"H.S.I. used to investigate companies violating labor laws. Now, instead of going after the business owners, they would be going after the employees. They had to hit 5 workplaces every single day. It started with anything that sounded even vaguely Hispanic and then became completely indiscriminate"
DOGE destroyed much of our government and killed a lot of people, but on the plus side it also cost the government a ton of money
Federal grants can save the lives of abuse victims. $200 million is sitting unspent.

It also means any private-sector claim of gender identity discrimination will automatically be dismissed. Trans and other gender nonconforming workers can still go to the courts, but that takes a lot of time and resources.
The immediate effect of this recent EEOC decision is that federal agencies can now deny employees access to bathrooms aligned with their gender identities without repercussion, which means workers are likely to suffer acute health problems.
The EEOC has officially reversed its decades-long position that workers are protected from gender identity discrimination by federal anti-discrimination law and says trans people don't exist www.thenation.com/article/soci...

Under the second Trump administration's immigration crackdown, far more people are having to pony up bond money to get out of detention--and the amounts they have to cobble together have absolutely skyrocketed talkingpointsmemo.com/news/under-t...
I profiled Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who pushed out roughly 70 percent of the Civil Rights Division's lawyers, turned DOJ's civil rights enforcement on its head, and is now reportedly in the running for attorney general

The administration so supposedly consumed with concern about fraud in government programs dropped 900 cases of federal program or procurement fraud and over 100 health care fraud cases www.propublica.org/article/trum...
It's notable what Trump is willing to do and not do during a shutdown. Last shutdown he refused to fund food stamps even though the law required it. Now he's ignoring the law and unilaterally paying TSA agents. bsky.app/profile/josh...
