I'm giving a public lecture Friday night (7pm Central, 17 April) for the Lake County Astronomical Society. If you'd like to join us, we'll be talking about how we gain knowledge about the distant universe -- see you there! Streaming link on YouTube is: www.youtube.com/@lakecountya...
Another interesting feature of the Arlanda Express is that if you are flying with SAS or Norwegian you can drop you bags at the city centre train station and they will check them through to your final destination. The price of this service is included in the train ticket!
The train from Arlanda to Stockholm has bar seating. Not quite sure why.
“In total, some 80GW of new clean renewable energy was added to the European grid last year — the peak equivalent of more than 50 nuclear plants”
My take on a nuclear energy re-think is in the @irishexaminer.bsky.social

After such an epic moonset, I was delighted to go home with just that but this day last year had another trick up its sleeve in the opposite direction. The horizon was all hazy, perfect to align the sunrise with North Bull Lighthouse.
Looks amazing
Where is this?
Journey completed. We made it to the beach.
Alicante! Last step is a private taxi to the beach town we're staying in. There is a bus but sadly it does not leave from the station and it does not leave regularly.
This train is flying along!
Up early for the last leg of the journey: Madrid to Alicante. There are plenty of later trains but we want to get half a day in at the beach today. 08:45 from Madrid Charmartín gets us into Alicante for 11:10. All for the price of €16!
It was €10 per adult for the Dublin to Rosslare train. The ferry is a little more expensive than flying but once you factor in the two nights accommodation you get and it is a lot more fun, it's worth it.
Made it to Madrid for sunset (arrived at 20:20). If you get the early train from Bilbao it would definitely be possible to do Bilbao to Alicante in a day. With a 4 year old we felt a overnight stay in Madrid was best.
The ferry crossing was €125 per adult. Given it was two nights with a kid we also got a 4 person berth for €184. The train from Bilbao to Madrid was €48 per adult and the Madrid to Alicante train was only €16 per adult.
The train from Miranda de Ebro starts slower but now doing 250+ kph! The train is quiet at first but more people join at Rosa Manzano. We'll be in Madrid in about 2 hours from now (the whole journey from Bilbao takes about 5 hours).
The slow travel continues as we move on to the Costa Blamca. Train from Bilbao to Madrid today, hotel for the night, and then on to Alicante. Bilbao Abando station is beautiful. The first train winds through the mountains and we change at Miranda de Ebro.
After 5 days in Bilbao we're saying goodbye. A great city with great food. Very easy with a four-year old as the pavements is so wide and many areas are free of cars. Definitely glad we brought his scooter.
The graphic shows the title of the talk and the authors. Title: "Gravitational waves from the late inspiral, transition, and plunge of small-mass-ratio eccentric binaires". Presented by Devin Becker. Authors: Devin Becker, Scott Hughes, Gaurav Khanna. A plot from the paper is shown.

The room was really nice ( I forgot to take a picture). Very clean and the shower was good. If I had any complaint it was only that there was not much space for luggage so it had to be between the bunks.
Very smooth. You were always aware of the gentle rocking of the boat but soon got used to it. We got a really good night's sleep on both nights.
A minibus takes the foot passengers from the ferry. After passport control the minibus drives you all the way into the city centre and drops you off right by the Guggenheim. Too early to check into the hotel so we explore the city.
We've arrived in Bilbao! Just waiting to disembark.
Lunch! There are two restaurants on board (and a club). We tried the fancier restaurant. The food was very nice. We passed close to a light house during lunch.
I saw some people with binoculars which is a good shout for this part of the journey. Passing between Le Conquet and Île de Quéménès
We saw a few people with bikes making the trip. Looked easy enough. The weather is glorious.
We're passing by Brittany and the weather is glorious. Lot of people out on deck. The staff organised an Easter egg hunt for the kids which was a fun way to explore the ship.
And we're off. Goodbye Rosslare. We'll arrive in Bilbao on Sunday morning. Time for bed.
Made it on to the ferry. Would be great if they could find a way to board foot passengers earlier. Family is asleep so time for quick look around. It's cold out on deck.
