Say hello to the UK’s most successful growth industry: organised waste crime | George Monbiot Thanks to a sustained ideological assault on regulation, our country has been turned into a literal dump, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Another triumph for deregulation! By saving a few million in monitoring and enforcement, our governments have landed us with a vast illegal waste dumping problem, new organised crime networks and a clean-up bill that could run to tens of billions.
My column.

I’m sure you’ll do well - anyone who supports Trump is clearly of a low order of intelligence.

@authorpetermay.bsky.social Just finished the 4th ‘Lewis’ volume - a very enjoyable read. Discovered your work during an unexpectedly transformative road trip on the Outer Hebrides in June. Thank you recreating the location’s enchantment along with a fascinating page-turner. Diolch

I don’t think our AVs ever met. Abbott’s Airfield and the frog are amazing coincidences, though.

Rarely. Just to keep the account alive: my primary avatar and the alts that were investigators for the agency - also the book’s main character. So much has changed, and of course all these AVs predated mesh. I loved SL, but was in danger of getting addicted, so bailed out after writing the book.

Virtually Dead Virtually Dead [May, Peter] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Virtually Dead

I spent my day binge-reading Peter May's murder mystery VIRTUALLY DEAD (www.amazon.com/Virtually-De...). The premise is a crime-scene investigator discovers links to real-life murders in the virtual world of #SecondLife.

I truly enjoyed this one, and couldn't put it down.

I did try to use the real (virtual) stuff that I came across in SL. After all, it would be hard to make stuff like that up!

Abbotts was a favourite location, and features in a promo video I made for the book which you might find interesting: youtu.be/GuQ0JrXuKgM?...

I think "Revere" did actually exists, though "Quick Thinker's" home never did. I believe the swingers club might have existed at one time. I think I went there to investigate an infidelity case.

I think I might have invented Poison Island, though the other two were definitely real. The "asian'styled" home was one that I had built.

Jersey Island was where I established the agency's first office, and where I received my first customers - the giant geckos - yes, they were real!

All these places did exist at the time.

Glad you enjoyed the book, Steve. I spent a couple of years in SL running my detective agency, The Flick Faulds Detective Agency, to research the story. Met lots of extraordinary individuals. Most of the locations used in the book existed at the time, though I know many are gone now.
