And then, because someone in the Northwoods (I assume Nanabozhoo) has a sense of humor, I got to spend an hour and change doing amateur beaver-proofing of a half-dozen poplars amid a 30-degree April wind chill.

April 14 means a lot to me:
* PUB DATE of When Democrats Won the Heartland,
* FIRST BIRTHDAY for our second kid, and
* EIGHT YEARS married to my wonderful wife, who has tolerated me and this book along the way. (Yes, our wedding was the 2018 blizzard.)

To many more years (though maybe not books).

64 is the ice shanty removal boundary line, so that's what i tend to gravitate toward, erring toward 8. (Plus, teaching in Point and dabbling in Wausau, no way would I count it or anything out my north window on 29 "up north".)

The CC that I taught at in the MinnState system was impressively awful in how brazen they were about relying on DE students. Each survey I taught had 50 in it; about 45 were PSEO, and 40 of those were from the local high school.

But "that's just the way it [was]" so on we marched.

This is leading to the gutting of yet another Minnesota State system school, St. Cloud State. It's been a PSEO/dual hub for a couple decades (I adjuncted '19-22), and the dept has gone from 10 to 4 (retirees + 1 retrench)...now the rumor is 2 retrenchments and death of the major coming shortly. Bad.

I'll share again: August 2017, I was in Grand Forks doing research when I went to Mass for Assumption.

Priest spent the homily distinguishing infallibility **ex cathedra** and point-blank telling everyone they could ignore Francis on climate and immigration. Easy to understand how Vance gets there.

Whoa: 6 years ago today I defended my dissertation. First Zoom defense for Marquette history dept -- one committeemember via phone, another video off the whole time.

Look at that face: Shaved. Young. No bags under my eyes.

Then came COVID, job market, kids, and the book. Alas.

Reading back over my marketing questionnaire from three months ago and I want to go back and hug this naive young man, then pat him on the head for thinking this.

See, I allowed my love of Bill Carmody, the Princeton Offense, and the 1-3-1 to seduce me. (But I have no regrets.)

One great thing about Cory Haala's book, (also mentioned by others,) is his tremendous use of our Family Farm Movement paper archives. So he uses lots of pre-internet information, not accessible online or for AI. He's a model for anyone doing farm issue/farm bill writing.
