A morbidly obese witch made of strawberries with a toothy mouth in her stomach sitting on the porch of a wooden cabin, next to her is a small strawberry person wearing a frosted muffin dress. A one-eyed creature in a translucent green jumpsuit can be seen jumping across a bunch of rocks that are sticking out of the water. At the bottom of the green waterfall is a fork in the riverbed that leads to two bodies of blood. Between the two paths is a Jack-O-Lantern sitting on a towel by the shore. The left path leads to a couple ships getting sucked into the mouth of a monster masquerading as a bridge, which acts as the stomach for a giant pumpkin woman holding a (comparatively) tiny wine glass with blood in it. On the right path is a pirate ship nearly crashing into a giant rock woman covered in gold and has an island on her head. Behind her is an acid pool where a normal sized woman (who is immune to radioactivity) can be seen surfing by a three head hydra, an open jaw of an undersea creature with an eyeball on its tougue that is shining a light on the lady and a gang of reptilian alien creatures climbing over some rocks.

While Sonic Superstars is a very flawed game that was clearly rushed in alot of aspects, there's something about its solid focus on level design as a vector for player expression through clever use of momentum and abilities that tickles that Arcade-y itch that many modern platformers sorely lack.

...repeat ad nauseum until the game is over. It's a good formula that allows for fun level ideas but so many of Nintendo's platformers (as well as some indie platformers clearly inspired by them) have used it that it has gotten stale, at least for me. Every level feels like an item on a checklist.

Super Mario Wonder, beyond its immaculate art direction, still feels like a NSMB game in spirit with how formulaic level and world progression feels for alot of it. Introduce gimmick of level, add obstacles to gimmick, collect the three or so collectibles to unlock levels, send off gimmick,...

Whereas with Wonder, I barely remember any of the game's music tracks outside of a select few exceptions. None of the tracks do more than the bare minimum of setting the mood. Their compositions lack memorable melodies and instrumentation that would stick in the player's mind beyond the game itself.

Another major complaint I don't fully agree with in regards to SS is the OST being "bad" when only a handful of songs would even come close to fitting that bill and even then, they often mainly suffer in terms of their instrumentation rather than their overall compositions. youtu.be/Y-mhF8oKUtU?...

...that you can ignore them as they are completely separated from the main game's progression, so they don't add anything to its difficulty curve. It doesn't help that each koopaling literally drops out of the game once you beat their respective boss fight and have little baring to the game's story.

...with a fuck me button that flashes just in case you don't know where to hit him. The Koopaling bosses are way better and more interesting in their designs and challenge but you need to buy a whole ass Next-Gen console on top of the DLC pack. The way they're implemented through the DLC means...

The final boss of Super Mario Wonder: Bowser as a head and hands with the aforementioned fuck me button under his chin.

Wonder's bosses on the other hand, are so barebones and formulaic in their design and how they're paced that makes all of them blend together in my mind as a largely forgettable, making the end of each world have no sense of payoff. Even the Final Boss design is baffingly bad being a head & hands...

I definitely agree that alot of the bosses make you wait too long to allow you to attack and all three final bosses needed checkpoints between phases, but proper use of the character's unique abilities and Emerald Powers do help in taking them down faster like S3&K does with the Insta-Shield.

...most modern Mario games (NSMB series, 3d Land/World, Wonder, etc.) do. But one of the main points of contention for both games are the bosses for different reasons. Superstars bosses were criticized for being too long and in some cases, too punishing for how much time is wasted on death.

So the Live system is largely superfluous for 99.9% of the game and even if it wasn't, the levels are never long enough to make the punishment of losing your checkpoint and/or collectibles for that level meaningful. Sonic Superstars took out them out of the game entirely and while it does lose...

I also think it's weird that people will criticize the Emerald Powers for "breaking the game" while defending all the hand-holding that Wonder does in regards to its Easy Mode characters + Assist Mode, especially since you need to do the Special Stages to get them and they aren't a "GIMME" the...

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yellow Toad (Ala-Gold), Blue Toad (Bucken-Berry), and Toadette are essentially the same character. There is a second character type with the Yoshis where they can flutter jump and swallow enemies but they not only can't take damage (making them a glorified easy mode), they also can't use any of the powerups which makes them less interesting to play as. Same applies to Nabbit but they don't even get the abilities unique to the Yoshis so he's even lamer.

Yoshi and Nabbit being Easy Mode characters means that if you want to replay the game but you've already done it with the regular characters, there's next to nothing that these characters add to the experience.

SS lets you play as different characters with their own moveset while half of Wonder's characters are purely for aesthetic and the other half with the actually different moveset are essentially the easy mode since they can't take damage (and they can't even use the power ups).

#thread WHY SONIC SUPERSTARS IS BETTER THAN SUPER MARIO WONDER!!!
First of all, look at these covers. Superstars is straight and to the point, just Sonic and his friends. Meanwhile, Wonder's new cover is just the old cover with the DLC shit and a block of text tacked on like a fungal growth.

This is how I usually draw.
To be honest, I personally feel that shading and coloring have a bigger impact on the overall mood of a piece than the balance or flow of the line art. I hope this helps someone, even if just a little!

A obese, sunburnt demon woman wearing a coconut bra is holding a Tougue-Hanger Hybrid creature and she is facing off against an equally fat vampire with jaundice and a bat-themed jetpack above the ocean. There are multiple islands across this body of water with various tougue-like fauna, giant mushrooms and a giant dryer with a giant crab next to it. The bottom half of the piece takes place underwater, where you can immediately see a Megalodon Mermaid about to eat a kingdom of Sea Monkeys that resides underneath one of the islands, some people with gills relaxing on the sandbar and a robotic eel. At the bottom of the ocean lies a huge pile of gold coins guarded by a giant fish lady with her human pirate girlfriend and a group of mermaids themed after various deep sea creatures. The pirate has a bubble helmet that allows her to breath underwater, which came from the fish woman's mouth. The fish woman's tail extends all the way into a cave, where it comes out of an open hole in one of the islands.
