An infographic showing the differences between Transient and resident orcas. 1) appearance Resident orcas have a more rounded dorsal fin and pigmentation in the white patch behind their fin (the saddle patch) 2) Diet: fish for residents vs marine mammals for transients 3) social structure Resident orcas live in stable, matrimonial groups. Transient orcas live in smaller more fluid groups. 4) vocalisations Resident orcas have a well developed vocalisation and are very vocal. Groups have unique dialects and they use echolocation to find prey. Transient orcas share a repertoire of calls with no dialects. They are quieter but yell when eating. 5) Range In summer and autumn Resident pods stay near coasts, but move further out in winter. Transient pods, as the name suggests, roam all over the place.

There are different groups of orcas which have specialised on totally different diets. They even look different!
Resident orcas feed on fish.
Transient orcas feed on seals and other marine mammals.
The third type, chaotic orcas, feed on boats.
