AI as a Fascist Artifact (This is a bit of a merger of two talks I recently gave about fascism and AI. One was in German at the Cables Of Resistance conference, one in English at the Milton Wolf Seminar on Media and Diplomacy. I added some shots of the slides I used as a structure for the text which […]

In which I argue that "AI" as we understand it today is a structurally fascist artifact.

I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.

Ultimately Silicon Valley’s fatal flaw is that it has a glut of losers in a loser echo chamber and they have no idea why nobody else thinks their ideas are good and fun

Elon Musk basically accused Trump of being a pedophile and then got dinner with him again a few months later. Joe Rogan acted shocked and dismayed about ICE and Iran and now he’s standing behind Trump in the Oval Office. These guys only care about holding onto power through any means necessary

I truly hate when little Right Wing Hitler youth open their mouths and give opinions in their over sized fake glasses, that they think will make them seem smart ,on things they know nothing about.

But listen to a real farmer rip her apart.

Monologue: On Dangerous Rhetoric Podcast Episode · Better Offline · April 17 · Bonus · 12m

Here’s this week’s’ Better Offline monologue. I discuss how AI labs’ dangerous rhetoric around AI capabilities and job loss is antagonizing society, and that de-escalation starts with Altman and Amodei talking about LLMs as normal software.

It’s Getting Harder to Spot AI in Contemporary Publishing. And That’s Very, Very Bad. Lately there has been a lot of hand-wringing, and rightly so, about if and how the publishing industry will deal with AI in the wake of the cancelation of the first major book deal due to suspected…

I wrote about how AI in book publishing is a labor issue. "AI paranoia is a symptom of a larger problem: a corporate culture that values quantity over quality, quick output over the very human labor of poring over a manuscript & making sure that each & every word sings."

It’s fucking bizarre how people are acting like something from 2022 is something they can’t live without.

Like dudes, the emotional dependence on a sycophantic machine regurgitating nonsense to encourage you to stop engaging in critical thought and trust the slop is truly depressing to witness.

6 days ago 3516 1148 16 29

the entire tech industry has ripped itself to shreds in order to prop up this bubble. it's sucked the air out of every single room. no one can pursue things they actually want to do because those projects have been reallocated to the machine that tells you lies.

because the people who push it so hard are doing so in order to con as many people possible and they literally do not give a shit about making something useful. they care about clout and money and power. it's a tool that only benefits people who crave power. nasty.

I'm gonna be completely real, there could be nothing environmentally wrong with using generative AI (and there is), there could be nothing wrong with how the data used to train models is harvested (and there is), and it could be genuinely useful for tasks (it's not) and i would still hate it.

it's because some fucking dude intentionally wants to con you so that you do not look behind the curtain.

all of this work to make the robot sound like a person is done INTENTIONALLY to upsell that AGI is a thing (it will never be). i have to argue with coworkers every day that the robot cannot think and they are all convinced that they have a gotcha when they say "then why's it called reasoning?"

6 days ago 0 0 1 0

avoid anthropomorphizing the robot because That Is How They Get You. the folks at openai did not think about the détriment forming an attachment to the chatbot could have; they just saw fools and money that could be parted from them. same with all AI companies, tbh.

6 days ago 0 0 1 0

i have to think about this a lot professionally, because technical writing best practice is to avoid anthropomorphization wherever possible. i used to think this was just for internationalisation (antrhopomorphic clauses dont translate well), but honestly, I think it is much more important to--

6 days ago 0 0 1 0

having been in the room for some of these naming conventions: the anthropomorphization of LLMs is 100% intentionally done with the explicit drive to prey on people's natural inclination to form emotional attachments on non-living things. the terms "agents" and "skills" were picked intentionally.

I Will Never Respect A Website If you like this piece and want to support my independent reporting and analysis, why not subscribe to my premium newsletter? It’s $70 a year, or $7 a month, and in return you get a weekly newsletter...

Today's free newsletter is about the dangers of treating AI as being more than it is - a website or app built on expensive technology, with dubious reliability and inherently unsustainable economics.

The rhetoric from AI labs has to change.
