Live Peregrine Falcon BirdCam | University of Birmingham YouTube video by University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham has the tallest freestanding clock tower in the world, nicknamed Old Joe after Joseph Chamberlain, its first chancellor.

Despite the fact it's campanile (has bells), a pair of Peregrine Falcons have nested in Old Joe’s tower every year since 2013. Here's a livestream:

Very much enjoying the bright yellow swathes of dandelions in the areas we seeded last year. Especially beautiful on the Bristol Road all the way to the University of Birmingham.

This year it's been poppies, from seeds collected last year and scattered in rough patches. Hope they'll do as well.

Green Party 'increase election ambitions after Polanski surge' The Green Party says it wants to 'give Birmingham hope again' after a tough couple of years for the city

We keep having to set our expectations higher as our members keep growing and our poll ratings keep improving.

#VotrGreenInBrum not just to keep Reform out, but to replace Labour and keep hope alive here.

I'm not sure the Clifton Road site is the best choice as it's quite close to Moseley, but there's definitely an argument for a Balsall Heath end station near Joseph Chamberlain College, on Highgate Road.

I just signed a petition to help save the Friends Institute in Birmingham. It’s been an amazing community hub since 1897, but the council is planning to close it down. We need to protect this space for the local groups that rely on it. Add your name: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sa...

Campaigners demand action to break UK’s ‘addiction’ to herbicides Use of glyphosate has risen 10-fold in 30 years, raising fears for public health

Glyphosate: “The government urgently needs to commit to phase out – and ultimately ban – glyphosate and support farmers and local councils to adopt safe and sustainable alternatives.”

Mass drowning of chicks puts emperor penguins at risk of extinction Record low levels of Antarctic sea ice is having grim consequences for penguins yet to grow waterproof feathers

Melting Antarctic ice means entire colonies can fall into the ocean, leaving the chicks to drown. Even if some penguins escape the water, they are soaked + will freeze to death.
4/5 known emperor penguin breeding sites in the Bellingshausen Sea collapsed in 2022, with the loss of thousands of chicks

Birmingham is facing many waste-based issues:
Dependence on the Tyseley Incinerator

This greatly inhibits Birmingham's capacity to recycle

Resulting in high rubbish collection costs and recyclable materials going to landfills

How can we create change?

Our volunteers, including John Newson, have been calling for the closure of the Tyseley Incinerator

To ensure the closure of the incinerator a recycling strategy must be put in place

Improvements in recycling would mean the incinerator will no longer be fuelled, reducing harmful byproducts

ACTION: Sign the petition and tell the UK government to protect our pollinators. The UK’s pollinator numbers are dropping heavily - we need the UK government to step in and protect them.

UK bee and other pollinator populations are dropping rapidly. This is partly due to how many pesticides we use – but it doesn’t have to be this way. France has banned pesticides from towns and cities.
Join me and tell the UK Government to follow in their footsteps and protect our pollinators:

‘The sums don’t add up’: UK farmers struggle as Iran war drives up costs Prices of crucial farming inputs such as fuel and fertiliser skyrocketed just before the spring planting season

“About a third of the global seaborne trade in fertilisers passes through the strait of Hormuz”

Time to plant more peas, beans & other nitrogen-fixing legumes, and cut down on excess fertiliser applications - which are also killing rivers & wildflowers:

Bayer offers $7.25bn to settle weedkiller cancer claims

17 February 2026
Bayer, the German bio-tech giant, has proposed paying $7.25bn (£5.35bn) to definitively resolve a legal battle in the US over whether its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer.

The possible settlement is part of a broader push to secure closure over the claims, which have weighed on the company since it bought Monsanto, the American-maker of the widely used but controversial herbicide.
