The same thing can and does happen to house prices, if only we let it happen:

Top: People complaining that a proposed 18-storey development in Old Montreal would be too big.

Bottom: People complaining about rent increases in older, more affordable neighbourhoods.

These are connected! Blocking new buildings puts pressure on the rest of the housing market.

How far back in time can you understand English? An experiment in language change

If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle.

It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get.

When a 1-unit house is replaced with ONE larger house, the new house is ~3X pricier. When replaced by 5+ houses, each new house will be (on avg) cheaper than the original house.

Change is part of the deal. Will we choose greater physical change, or greater price change?

As a history grad I feel like a growing part of the broader humanities is just "studying history but without any rigor, and calling it something different"

Los Angeles is wildly behind on their housing production.

Bass is hoping you won't notice if she hides the evidence.

As great as getting people into shelter is, it's just a small bandaid on a festering wound.

Right-NIMBYism is the generally correct belief that you can keep your city exclusive by blocking new housing.

Left-NIMBYism is the mistaken idea that you can keep your city affordable and attainable by blocking new housing.

Karen Bass and Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker are disgraceful, and Bass is outright lying about her attempts to delay the K line northern alignment

Initial Thoughts BAE Urban Economics' Analysis of Measure ULA — Better Institutions The analysis has serious flaws, and advocates are drawing sweeping conclusions from narrow findings.

The Measure ULA coalition has a new report and I thought it was pretty bad, so I wrote about some of the reasons why: www.betterinstitutions.com/blog/2026/3/...

I’d assume her motion is to call for further study/environmental review/ or to shift the line to avoid that one neighborhood at the cost of $300 million

Using same playbook holly Mitchell did to switch the southern alignment and delay/kill/add ruinous costs to that project

Nick andert had a good thread explaining and put out a YouTube video on it,
Bass trying to ratfuck the k line northern extension to appease 30 homeowners with entirely nebulous “tunneling concerns” in the same neighborhood where both bass and her feckless metro

No, there are not 28 vacant homes for every homeless person The claim rests of two wildly misleading statistics

Also worth reminding the vacancy truthers that 60% of census-defined housing vacancies last less than six months, closer to 65% in most urban areas I've looked at.

yes precisely, though PRC would also be partly besieged. most of their oil, and about 30% of food is imported by maritime routes, and they can't really defend or force project to the strait of malacca. 33% of global trade stopping dead would certainly be interesting for everyone involved lol.

which admittedly puts us in the situation a lot of the wargames seem to go currently, where the taiwan invasian results in messy stalemate and economic catastrophe for both sides rather than conquest, so I suppose you're not really wrong

ehh, it also applies to a large extent to the accuracy of the fires we will be throwing back at the PRCs RoRos and landing craft

West Portal crash: S.F. judge says driver who killed family of 4 will get probation Mary Fong Lau, 80, will face no jail time according to remarks from San Francisco Superior Court Judge Bruce Chan. She must complete 200 hours of community service and undergo probation.

Mary Fong Lau, the 80 year old woman who killed four people including a baby and a toddler after crashing into a bus stop going 75mph the wrong way down a 25mph street, has been sentenced to probation and will not permanently lose her drivers' license.

This is a despicable miscarriage of justice.

For those that missed the metro board committee meeting today: Karen Bass is officially moving full steam ahead on trying to ratfuck what would be the highest ridership light rail line in the country next week, over unscientific tunneling concerns identical to fred rosen's in bel air.

Traffic safety improvements frequently die by popular vote. It’s time to stop that When given the choice, Americans often chose personal convenience over improvements in road safety.

"We don’t hold referendums on airplane safety" is an excellent point
