rightwingers see people caring about others in their community and instead of finding that inspiring they think it’s some sort of grand conspiracy because they don’t understand what it means to care for others you don’t personally know

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

"They had the Black people in one van, and the immigrants in another van”—a report from a Chicago apartment building. These are essentially white nationalist attacks on US residents, including children, being paid for with our tax dollars

Some immigrants in Chicago now fear ICE more than gunfire Donald Trump's deployment of federal agents to cities is based on the disproven claim that immigrants commit a disproportionate number of violent crimes.

“They are taking innocent people, and it’s affecting the community,” Raquel said. “You can’t even be at peace in your own home.”

There seems to be an inverse correlation between how much you talk about free speech and how much you actually believe in it when it opposes your worldview.

There are many reasons why journalism is not attractive to wealthy donors. The pitch for funding real journalism is, essentially, “Give us money. You can’t tell us anything about what to do with it. Then we will write stories inimical to your interests. Over the course of years, civic society will be strengthened.” This tends to strike rich people as unattractive. They are generally looking for something more along the lines of, “Our publication will be the equivalent of injecting an undecided voter with a powerful drug that will indoctrinate them into our way of thinking, like an acid-crazed Manson acolyte.” Journalism cannot promise this sort of ROI. Propaganda can. The confident pitches of propagandists often turn out to be little more than attempts to soak well-intentioned rich people for as much money as possible, using oversimplified promises of grand influence in record time. Oh well. That’s what you get for believing propagandists.

The protest songs that drove the Wobblies a century ago are still lighting fires - Chicago Reader Labor firebrand Joe Hill wrote some of the most enduring anthems in the IWW’s Little Red Songbook—and today’s activists carry on his legacy.

It’s International Workers’ Day, which is a good moment to revisit this heater of a Reader music story by the great @kimkelly.bsky.social
