Review: “Two Women” Dares You to Not Consider the Consequences Years of misogynistic and puritanical filmmaking has beaten the idea of female marital subservience into our heads. Men can regularly engage in terrible behavior, but the wife is expected to be the long-suffering woman who deals with it. Chloé Robichaud's Two Women dares the viewer to let women sow their oats and watch them get away with it.

I'm sure people will be turned off by this film and its blasé approach to sex and infidelity. Shut down the part of your brain that may be outraged, you may be rewarded with an unorthodox tale of modern love

Review: You’re Gonna Love “Michael” Despite What I Say About It As I left my screening of Antoine Fuqua's Michael, I heard a woman exclaim, "That was exactly what I wanted!" This is the overall goal of this film. You will learn absolutely nothing about Michael Jackson the man, but you will get every hit song with loud and vibrant performances.

This is in no way a good film, and barely competent at times. But all that doesn't matter because the filmmakers got Michael Jackson music, which is exactly what you want.

Review: “I Swear” Somehow Balances Misery with Brightness Kirk Jones' I Swear is not a pity party. Depicting the struggles and realities of living life with Tourette syndrome could have easily defaulted into a "woe is me" narrative devoid any hope for the audience. Despite the dour nature of the story, this film somehow manages to find the lightness in the despair.

This film could have easily defaulted to a story of misery and pity, but smartly shifts towards hope and lightness, despite the narrative weight. For a film with such sadness, it's shockingly light.

Review: “Miroirs No. 3” Solidifies Christian Petzold as a Master of Intelligent Adult Drama The word "adult" conjures up a litany of interpretations and preconceived ideas about a film. Director Christian Petzold recontextualizes the idea of adult into an artform with his films. With Miroirs No. 3, the director presents a gentle puzzlebox of a story with the patience and intelligence few films are given these days.

This film is intelligent, patient, quiet adult filmmaking at its best. Director Christian Petzold delivers in a way only he can backed up by a pair of dynamite actresses doing some of their best work.

Review: “Thrash” is Purposeless, Thrill-less, and Pointless By their very design, shark movies are meant to be thrilling, edge-of-your seat terror fests. While most shark films tries to be Jaws, others lean into the more campy elements, like Deep Blue Sea or The Meg. Tommy Wirkola's Thrash lands in that dreaded in-between where everything is taken too seriously, while forgetting to contain any sort of thrills.

This film is a pointless survival thriller devoid of tension or investment. If this was ever released on physical media, it would be doomed to the $5 bargain bin where it belongs.

Review: “Hamlet” Has a Great Setting, But is Still Missing Something The very idea of 'Riz Ahmed doing Hamlet" is a great way to start. With seemingly endless adaptations of one of Shakespeare's most famous works, director Aneil Karia has surrounded the narrative with fresh eyes and a dynamite setting. If all that is a plus, why does it feel so empty?

This film is by no means unwatchable, thanks in most part to Riz Ahmed as the titular character. Unfortunately, this was a chance to do something really special with the story. It just misses the mark.

I wrote about The Drama for The Film Experience. If you ever wondered what would happen if Tim Robinson wrote a romantic drama that only he thought was a comedy, wonder no more. A tough film to write about without spoiling.

Review: “Tow” is So Formulaic, It’s Almost Impressive We have seen variations on the "little person fighting against the system" film a thousand times. Audiences are smart enough to know what is coming and what the story beats will be. Stephanie Laing's Tow follows the formula so thoroughly and expectedly, it's almost self-aware...almost.

Too predictable to enjoy, and too boring to be memorable, this film wastes a talented cast among the most predictable and safe filmmaking tropes.

You really don't have to twist yourself into knots every time a terrible person does something good. You don't have to wring your hands, you don't have to delve into their motivations, you can just be like "cool" and never think about it again.

2025 Oscars Recap The 2025 Oscars are in the books and I have some thoughts. I promise not to get into the muck and mire of think-pieces or hot takes,

I don't have grandiose thoughts or hot takes about last night's ceremony. It was a solid ceremony, with great winners and some fun moments. More good than bad, which is a win in and of itself.

Review: “Project Hail Mary” is Everything Big-Budget Filmmaking Should Be When you combine the filmmaking talents of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the near-unlimited budget of a massive studio, a well-received novel, and the unending charisma of Ryan Gosling, you get Project Hail Mary. A film where everything comes together to create the ideal Hollywood blockbuster.

This film is the perfect combo of high-brow sci-fi, crowd-pleasing entertainment, big-budget filmmaking, and movie star charisma. I wish all films with this kind of budget would keep getting made.

Review: “The Bride!” Certainly Earns the Exclamation Point Punctuation matters in film titles. Whether it's the quotation marks in "Wuthering Heights" or the intentional commas of Crazy, Stupid, Love, these little marks go beyond simple grammatical correctness. Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! puts an emphatic exclamation at the end of her title, and spends the next two hours earning every second of that elicited punctuation.

If you keep your expectations in check, this film may be a rewarding cinematic experience. It's certainly making an effort, and the whole cast and crew are having a lot of fun. I certainly enjoyed myself.

Review: “Hoppers” is Cute and Funny, and Doesn’t Have to Be More Than That The Disney/Pixar collaborations have broken our brains as moviegoers. When you are able to produce the Toy Story films plus certified classics like WALL-E, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles, expectations are going to be too high. Daniel Chong's Hoppers isn't trying to do too much other than be a cute and funny story. And frankly, that's refreshing.

This film is exactly the kind of film parents can take their kids to and enjoy the experience. It might not reach the highs of previous Pixar entries, but it certainly is fun to watch.
