Where did this idea that placeholder art must look like shit come from. The point of placeholder art is to accomplish its goal (layout, lighting, playtest, etc) with the minimal effort possible. No part of that is β€œalso needs to look terrible” (sometimes that would even breaks its goal).

Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc.

If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

I'd also encourage them NOT to do a game jam as their starting point. It's probably the worst environment to learn in if you are completely fresh.

I'd also suggest they become a tech artist instead and learn blender/houdini and some programming for tools & game code.

Tech Artists are the golden geese of every studio. Decent ones are significantly in demand by everyone.
