Prose style when you start writing up some research, versus when you're trying to squeeze under a word count.
I have a papyrology joke bu[t ca. 15 ].
They’re telling me a great empire will be destroyed if I attack Persia. Even the oracles who don’t like me very much, very nasty, they all said to me, “Sir, it’s one of the great empires, and it’ll be destroyed. And all because you attacked Persia.” That’s what they’re telling me.
It's a fun site! (And handy for teaching)
Thanks a question on the Liverpool list, I looked up Seneca's bit about death by lightning versus diarrhea, and can now report that the word Seneca uses for diarrhea is the extremely vivid "deiectio," or "downthrow" (as Corcoran's note). The grandeur of ancient literature!
A book, edited by the (very productive) Klaas Bentein and Marja Vierros, with linguistic approaches to documentary papyri (and "related sources"). Some pretty interesting chapters, and a nice state-of-play reflection from Trevor Evans!
A really great book on a fantastic topic. If you haven't checked it out already, now's the perfect time! 🌴
Exactly! Also the Greek polytheists, I'm pretty sure, though that's a bit more niche. 😀
However you feel about the Tridentine Mass, it is definitely not in English (just as plenty of other religious services around the county).
Former prime minister Scott Morrison tries to dog whistle about Islam, accidentally calls for the banning of the Latin Mass in Australia:

It's pretty good! And modestly sized, so you don't need to plan your whole day around going through the exhibit.
The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.
And trans lives are grounded in reality.
We see y'all. No matter what.

It is such an honor to work with Dan. Take a few minutes to listen to his conversation (with Waleed Aly).
One exciting thing about checking my spam filter is discovering that a new volume of the "everyone in antiquity was actually Saint Mark" saga has dropped.

A great night last night at the Monash Student Communities awards as Orion College was named College of the Year for the second time in three years. A tribute to the great work of the members and advisors who have built a fantastic community. #BigPurple
Marc Bloch will be admitted to the Pantheon in Paris! The date for the "Panthéonisation" is set for 16 June 2026. Meanwhile, @sorbonneparis1.bsky.social has launched a website to keep track of the many conferences to celebrate the event. Some of them start this month.

Hey pocket friends. Just a heads up that if I'm suddenly blanking you after December, it's not you, it's my government.
I found @brianphillips.bsky.social's defense of the em dash to be thoughtful, beautifully expressed, and human!!!
Say, hypothetically, you had a godson who has just turned 8 and has (thanks partly to you and partly to Bluey) gotten really into cricket, but who lives in a non-cricketing country. Would anyone have suggestions for presents? I have some thoughts but would be glad for any ideas!
