If anyone's curious, it's a clip of Dave Grohl during an interview addressing Canadians that the band pronounces it nirv [ษ‘] na, not nirv [รฆ] na. But when pressed on it he says "I don't give a shit what they call it"

William Labov, โ€˜father of sociolinguisticsโ€™ who studied the Philadelphia accent, dies at 97 William Labov's work changed whose dialects linguists saw worthy of study and dove into the socioeconomic politics of language. He is considered the father of sociolinguistics.

A lovely obituary for Bill Labov in the Inquirer.

Even though we associate language death with modern times, languages have been dying out in Late Antiquity too. Sometimes (well, most of the time) we learn about how it happened in quite unusual ways. A little thread ๐Ÿงต 1/

The ancestor of 'to forget' meant "to lose hold of".

It was the opposite of 'to get'.

Speaking of 'to get', this verb is special: it only has cognates in the Nordic languages, such as Norwegian 'รฅ gjeta'.

It was even borrowed from their Old Norse ancestor 'geta'.

Iโ€™d accept being mid if it meant that I was never stressed #linguistics

Their course selections are also pretty good: 500-700 lessons for the most in-demand languages (including Levantine Arabic, for which good materials are difficult to come by as itโ€™s not the formal language), while there are decent starter courses of 50-70 lessons for many harder-to-find languages.

That said, I donโ€™t believe Iโ€™ve yet come across their AI content and Iโ€™m a bit dismayed to hear theyโ€™re moving in that direction. (At the very least, AI language content should be labeled as such).

Personally, Iโ€™ve been quite happy with Mango Languages for a number of their courses. I find it takes the best of the Pimsleur method, broken into more digestible chunks and gamified. I certainly have criticisms/suggestions but itโ€™s one of the better tools Iโ€™ve found.
