I figure it's healthy to let the abyss win the staring contest now and then.

The Goblin turns 4 today! Properly adult, but still the baby of the family.

Manage to cut ~80 from my Audible wishlist because I realised how many were just "life is misery and we are doomed" themed.

They weren't even post-apocalyptic.

Literary fiction is dark af.

I still don't understand how sand manages to get beneath 3 blankets & a fitted sheet.

It's been like a week and a half since she went to the beach.

WHERE IS IT COMING FROM???

Finally watched #Sinners & it kinda shirt-circuited my research brain with all those layers.

If it had been out when I was doing my PhD... I would've had a totally different thesis.

More lessons from true crime: Don't live in Kent if you want a natural & ungruesome death.

Good life tip in general, tbh.

Further lessons from true crime TV: Being bubbly with a smile that lights up the room & really just a very good person 100% means you will be murdered by that person no one remembered but is so shocked because they never imagine he could do something like that. Ever. Just truly such a shock.

Finally watched One Battle After Another - killer soundtrack BTW - but it made me realise I could probably just write descriptions if the people I encountered growing up & get a decent book out of it.

No one'd believe a damn thing, but I bet they'd buy it.

I found another place where I can buy very pretty books for lots of money (but not unreasonably, considering, but financial exploitation via education) & this is sad because pretty books make me happy.

Shazam is the weirdest superhero. OK, maybe not the weirdest, but definitely up there.

Who thought that up? Hey, so it's this superhero who's bulletproof, super fast, has lightning...

So, kinda like the Flash?

Nonono - that's the twist! His alter ego is a 14 year old kid!

Peopling is very stressful. I need the social like anyone else but unwinding my brain tangle is so difficult & tiring I often just give up.

Is it too laye to opt out of mainstreaming?

The Goblin did exceptionally well today having her first spa day with a new groomer, getting stood up by 3 cabs, & still getting her disabled human home (3 km) safe & sound.

We've come so far from the puppy who refused to go any further than the front stoop.

a silhouette of a monster with red eyes in the woods Alt: a silhouette of a monster with red eyes in the woods

I often question the wisdom of listening to @lorepodcast.bsky.social at bedtime.

Not enough to not do it, but I question.

Cryptids really freak me out.

They're probably the only thing I'm legitimately afraid of.

Yes, legitimately. I know what words I mean.

Still miffed about being lectured on my own little known culture by someone whose expertise comes from 2 days of Google AI search results by someone from a radically different ethnic framework on literally the other side of the world.

It's the hypocrisy I'm stuck on.

Big scary thunder noise so we're watching Big Bang Theory.

What it is about this show that solves all her problems, but it's frickin hilarious how much she loves it.

She'll even struggle to stay awake so she can keep watching ๐Ÿ˜‚

Still trying to wrap my head around being criticised for being a white settler.

In Scotland.

I mean. It's technically true, but also wtf?

Cos they're only used as scare quotes, officially. US-sourced autocorrect software has muddied that a bit but tradition will zlways prevail! It is the "UK," after all. ๐Ÿฆ„๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ‡....๐Ÿฆ

There's a whole related thing about when punctuation goes in/outside quotes but I'll just leave the teaser.

(100% cheeky)

๐Ÿ˜‚ Complete opposite ends of the spectrum - "grab & go" and "plot & plan." Just goes to show the only right way for you is your way. Try both. Mix it up. Invent something entirely new.

Just don't give up. You'll find the right groove.

It's one of those scenes that hits all the right notes. The moment in #Endgame just before "on your left" has the same vibe. That one shot says everything you need to know about Steve Rogers.

It's an entire character arc in those few moments, from pleading with Zod, to the coldly efficient way he kills him, the anguish & anger of being forced to go against everything he believes, to clinging to Lois in grief, which is even more stark due to the size difference between Adams & Cavill.

I think Zack Synder's Superman is the only one I've found interesting. In #ManOfSteel when he's forced to kill Zod epitomises the strength of his character more than any other portrayal, & is probably the most powerful because it contrasts both his strength & his vulnerability.

Don't think about cohesion or chronology.

If a scene gets stuck or flounders, jump to something that's moving. It'll all sort itself out in the end.

A novella is basically just a bunch of interrelated flash stories loosely connected together because the author says so.

Fenruary reading statistics from Storygraph.

Fenruary reading statistics from Storygraph.

I've actually been reading more nonfiction than anything (law things), but those aren't classifiable.

What would a law report be? Novella? Novel? Anthology? Creative nonfiction? Total fiction?

Hard to judge. (Ha!)

protect total strangers. So what are you going to do?

Rant on social media? Be righteously rude to someone seeking information because the mean kids hurt your feelings? If you're afraid of going to jail, don't be different. That sounds harsh, but it's reality. Rights aren't handed out for free.

"Don't panic" isn't the same as "it doesn't matter."

It's: Don't be emotional about it. Be methodical. Be calculated. Use every loophole & every stall tactic. Wars aren't won by weeping & wailing, & this isn't even a new war.

is an option.

This is abbreviated because social media, it's early, & I haven't had breakfast.

BTW, I am trans. And yes, I would drive regardless. I've been doing this since the DSM IV. I got my ID changed before anyone contemplated making it legal. And not because of any privilege or talent.
