Read that again. This Louisiana bill forces homeless people to choose between jail and "treatment"—and if they can't pay for the latter, they will be forced to perform unpaid labor.
The historical precedents are clear: convict leasing, Black Codes, debtor's prison.

The Movement Media Alliance stands in solidarity with journalist Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, who has now been held in a Kuwaiti prison for over a month, denied regular access to legal counsel, and cut off from the public work that has defined a distinguished career in international journalism.
Phone access has a real effect on whether or not someone gets deported.
But "Alligator Alcatraz" guards are using physical violence to obstruct that basic right.

This year U.S. Mother's Day (second Sunday in May) coincides with Mother's Day in Mexico which always falls on May 10.
Donating to support detained migrants would be a great way to commemorate the day.
One of the reasons I turned abolitionist was realizing that every form of detention and incarceration is DESIGNED to separate people from relationships of love and support, which create social stability.
Art exhibit at Brooklyn Public Library asks visitors to imagine a world without prisons
“The Warehouse,” a collaboration between artist Vic Liu & abolitionist organizer Mariame Kaba, builds an environment where visitors can see and feel through the possible answers prismreports.org/2026/04/13/w...
My latest for Truthout. Along with reporting on the uptick in troops leaving the military under Trump's administration, I wrote about the longer history of wars abroad forcing troops to think about their role in carrying out state violence.
In detention, a 15-min. phone call can cost as much as $17. For a parent to have a short call with their child daily, they'd pay $119 a week.
No one should be incarcerated, torn from their families. AND it's essential to support people in staying connected while inside.

EMERGENCY PROTEST STOP TRUMP'S WAR ON IRAN! WED. APRIL 8 6 PM
CHICAGO! TODAY!!
My 96 year old Jamaican aunt who has a very sharp understanding of US politics asks me with increasing agitation each time we speak why these fools don’t stop him & at some point there is nothing to say except I’m sorry auntie they are more aligned with him than not we’re doing our best despite them
You have more in common with the people of Iran than you do with anyone in this administration, any member of the technocracy, anyone who is profiting from this war, or any billionaire. When you see Iranians forming human chains outside key infrastructure sites, you should feel a sense of kinship.
I know everyone is probably breathing a sight of relief about the Trump Truth Social post but my uncle said they just bombed the bridge he'd use if he wanted to evacuate Tehran and a friend in Iran says the whole country is terrified. This is NOT the moment to let up!
From now on, before anyone in the U.S. says anything, other countries should ask: "Do you condemn your fascist regime?"
So many people here expect everyone to first condemn X regime to speak about any injustice. Let's see how it feels when the shoe is on the other foot.
"We also need to address the dehumanization that persists in every single aspect of American life... that has sent us down the path in which Trump can threaten to annihilate a civilization & we find ourselves with few answers about how to stop it."

All of us are dissociated and dissociating to make it through today. I hope you give yourself and others grace.
The genocidaires have already started their shooting and crying films.
Keep hearing stories of loved ones in Iran going about their days, doing their part to make life continue for their communities despite these unhinged proclamations. The entire US political establishment that lets this continue isn’t worth a single hair on the head of a Red Crescent rescue worker.
Quote card from FPF Chief of Advocacy Seth Stern that reads: “Confidential sources are the lifeblood of investigative journalism. Sources who come forward at great personal risk won’t do so if they don’t trust that their identities won’t be revealed. “Some of the most important news stories in American history have come from confidential sources, including stories that have brought down corrupt presidents. That’s why Trump is so obsessed with leaks. It has nothing to do with national security.”
Journalists don’t work for the governmentt and their right to publish government leaks is protected by the First Amendment which, despite President Trump’s efforts, remains the law of the land.

Palestinian activist Leqaa Kordia was freed on March 16 after spending more than a year in an ICE jail in Texas. She was arrested in 2025 as part of the Trump administration’s campaign to target student activists and others who advocated for Palestinian rights.
The impact of what she has done will impact countless lives for years to come.
Pam Bondi is out of a job! Now most of media is focused on her Epstein file legacy. However few people are discussing her role in weaponizing the law enforcement system, first in Florida and then nationwide, against trans people.
YES
there are just endless things to learn from these folks.
Last week, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court struck down the state’s mandatory punishment of life without parole for felony murder, ruling that it violates the state’s constitutional prohibition against “cruel punishment.” theappeal.org/pennsylvania...
“What started as your common-sense guide to prison has shifted into something entirely different. So let me tell you what life is like on parole,” writes columnist Derek R. Trumbo, Sr. Each day is carefully mapped out & each decision starts with an exhausting mental checklist.
It's really something, for SCOTUS to strike down a conversion therapy ban on Trans Day of Visibility.
God this is so funny "we don't believe our journalism should be taking an advocacy position" says the NYT as it publishes anti-trans screeds that get cited in judicial opinions restricting trans healthcare
Moreover, ICE must be destroyed
“Trans people in prison are experts on organizing under conditions of extreme censorship, surveillance, and repression."
