American war correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed in action on April 18, 1945. Before he died, Pyle was working with Hollywood on his biographical film "The Story of G.I. Joe" (1945) and Burgess Meredith played Pyle.

The film premiered 2 months to the day after Pyle was killed.
