SCOOP: Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is planning to eliminate the city's sustainability and climate department under the guise of a push to prevent increases to property taxes in his proposed 2026 budget.
Great source work by Marc Fawcett-Atkinson to uncover this

I’m disappointed to hear Commissioner Haer’s comments challenging the use of land acknowledgements. These acknowledgements are not performative to me. They are one small daily practice that flows from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and from the principles of UNDRIP.

Some breaking news: in a special Vancouver Police Board meeting only announced over the weekend, the police board has requested a $50 million increase to their budget for 2026.
This comes as other departments across the city are trying to cut staff to ensure a property tax freeze for next year.
Ken Sim and ABC are bringing ~$120m in cuts to community centres, parks, and public services.
On Thursday, City Council is voting on a $17m retroactive boost to the 2025 police budget.
Now the Police Board is asking for another extra $50 million in 2026.

“The optics are, oh, the police get everything they want.”
Here’s my story on the Vancouver Police Department asking for a $50 million increase to their 2026 budget while others city departments are facing challenges — and how at least one board member seemed aware of the conflict it would create.
A photo from Stanley Park in the fall with vibrant, orange leaves on some trees. There's a green box with the words, "Affirming the Park Board’s Commitment to Transgender Lives and Rights PASSED!" and below that a quote from Vancouver Park Board Commissioner Tom Digby of the Vancouver Green Party that says, "To me, the most important part is the apology that goes out to the community... and I think the obligation is on us at the Park Board to convince you that this apology is real and will lead to concrete actions to support your lives and rights."
@tomdigby1.bsky.social's motion for Affirming the Park Board’s Commitment to Transgender Lives and Rights PASSED UNANIMOUSLY! Thanks all who came to speak for sharing your voices & supporting the motion.

A map of the proposed bike lane in Stanley Park, which goes up the hill to Prospect Point and then down the hill.
(2/5) The good news is @tomdigby1.bsky.social is calling for a bike lane around prospect point and down the hill, for the safety of cyclists, active mobility and micromobility users. To help this pass, we really need people to email in support and call in to the meeting.
A survey showing that the vast majority of respondents said that a Dedicated Bike Lane in Stanley Park would "make [the park] much better." It was the number one choice.
🚨 Important call to action! (1/5) 🚨
A vote on Stanley Park is coming to the Park Board on Sept 15. The staff report calls for working with TransLink to bring bus service around the park (great!!) but no bike lane, despite it being the favourite option among respondents. Report linked here:

❗❗BREAKING: The future of transit in Stanley Park is on the agenda.
We need YOUR help to make sure cyclists aren’t left behind.

No one should dispute the National Energy Program’s devastating impact on Alberta’s conventional oil and gas sector 40 years ago.
But the oilsands, not conventional oil, propelled Canada to its position as the world’s fourth-largest oil producer. @ianurquhart.bsky.social writes.

Candidates for Vancouver Municipal Party Say They Attended Multiple Events with Conspiratorial Far-Right Groups By Accident

Lol. Thanks Ian!
Honoured to announce today as the Green Party of Canada candidate for Vancouver Quadra. With local, national and international experience, I am ready to be your voice in Ottawa. Solid leadership under Elizabeth May and Jonathan Pednault.
As the dad of a 9-year-old, I'm deeply concerned by the lack of headline puns.
I mean, this is a tariffying moment.
Come on, free press.
Someone in Kitsilano has a very funny sense of humour. Apparently this isn’t their first installation either 😂
I keep getting questions about the “toxic environment” in city hall. It seems to me like it might be a toxic environment within a certain party and if not kept in check, the whole of Vancouver will feel it.
This week’s edition includes child welfare, self-governance, education, Aboriginal title litigation and more @ https://buff.ly/4gutWP2
I am so proud and honoured to be running as the Green Party of Vancouver candidate in the upcoming by-election. I have incredible mentors in @ptfry.bsky.social and @adrianecarr.bsky.social . I am eager to join Pete in fighting for transparency on city council.
Photo of a letter from FortisBC regarding our recent elimination of gas from our home. I’ve highlighted the following paragraph: “We encourage you to reconsider natural gas. Versatile, abundant and one of the cleanest burning fuels available, natural gas can cook your food, dry your clothes and heat your home and water. It’s also economical. You could save up to $500 a year on your heating bills using natural gas instead of electric baseboards.”
We got rid of our last gas appliance recently, & just got this letter from FortisBC urging us to ‘reconsider’ gas. Wild to see a fossil fuel company this desperate to keep people hooked on methane. Fossil gas is terrible for climate & health—especially for kids. This is straight-up propaganda.
Wait for Ken Sim bitcoin amendment
Deep down inside, Trump does not want to appear to be a “bad guy”. They are ALL the same!
