Firmly of the opinion that everyone should have a car book (the book you fit into otherwise empty time—waiting rooms, between errands—that you’d otherwise spend on your phone). Mine, currently, is Fitzgerald’s Beautiful and Damned.
Mudie's Select Circulating Library lay at the heart of the Victorian publishing system. Karen Wade's site, now at a new URL, makes it possible to explore the library's catalogues as never before, with an index of 22,000 novels by 6000 authors. curatr.ucd.ie/mudies/

Just going to repost this photo of my boy whenever I think the world needs it.

It’s been a hard couple of days, and just in case that’s true for you too, here’s a picture of my dog.
Famously an influence on Shary Flenniken’s Trots and Bonnie. I write about Flenniken, Webster, and Clare Briggs in this, forthcoming in August:
Available for pre-order now, publishing in August! The New Old Style: Anachronism in Contemporary Comics.
Mariners underperformed two of their first three games so I got rid of the beard and now they’re up 6-0. The universe is telling me something.

Yes, this experiment has been humbling.

I love everything about this.
Kieth was incredible. Completely singular style and vision—eccentric, beautiful, strange. Awful to lose him.

My elementary school did regular trips to the Cincinnati Zoo, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and Fort Boonesborough. My kids’ school goes to Yellowstone, and I’m envious.
Stacked paperback books: Sigmund Freud, The Psychopathology of Everyday Life; Clarice Lispector, Too Much of Life; and Eugène Sue, The Mysteries of Paris.
Most recent three book purchases have all been doorstops.
I grew up on the Kentucky side of the river, just next to this town, and to this day I’m grateful for the fact that my elementary school history teachers took pains to explain to us the significance of where we lived.
Speaking of forthcoming books, I’m exited to see Sophie Oliver’s, on modernism and clothing, on the Manchester UP website!

Looking down at a pair of cross country skis and poles in the middle of a snowy set of tracks
We finally got snow, so a good day to take the plunge and try cross country skiing. Highly recommended.
It’s okay! It happens. But thanks for correcting!
A great review of Comics and Modernism, and a nice mention of my piece in that volume. My name is misspelled, but the praise of Jonathan Najarian’s editorial hand is entirely correct.
Child’s drawing of a “wash musheen” with tiny dots, aggressively labeled “crums,” underneath it.
My kindergartener, learning the letter U, was asked to illustrate the concept of “under,” so naturally the first thing that came to her mind was crumbs under the washing machine.
