This is sort of an aside, but I really dislike the increased use of the shorthand “cradle Catholic” vs. “convert” to represent the divide between ordinary and MAGA/Vance-type Catholics.

It’s not a good proxy, even if there is a prominent subset of recent converts that seem to make it so.

Look, you are allowed to be a Catholic and say the pope got something wrong. I caught his voice on the radio news while driving today, and it occurred to me that that never happened with any previous pope, unless maybe I happened to be on the Catholic station (which is a rarity).
