Chapter One
Low thrumming of the melody composed by cicadas in the bushes and trees outside the quaint house served as background music, setting the lazy summer into the air. It was Daisy’s favorite time of the year because it meant her girls’ were home a lot more and the family would go to the lake almost every day. There would be no lake today as Millie and Penny were sprawled on the old gray sofa with their limbs hung about in every which way, dressed almost all the way down to their fur-less arms and legs to keep the heat at bay.
Smacking her lips together, Daisy stretched out long until her paws touched Millie. The young girl’s bright brown eyes glittered in the sunlight as she smiled and placed one hand over her head, the soft velvety touch of her fingers rubbing the inside of ear. Closing her eyes, Daisy groaned in harmony hoping she would never stop. She LOVED ear rubs almost as much as she loved her family.
Fumbling with one ear, Millie paused to look at the TV. “Oh!” She squealed, pointing at the distorted screen, flickering yellow and green lights. “This is the movie I wanted to see last year.”
Pulling down the corners of her lips, Penny scrunched her small, dry nose until her top lip almost touched. “Does the dog die?”
“We can look it up,” suggested Millie.
As the two girls talked amongst themselves, Daisy’s eyelids grew heavy. Blinking a couple of times, her world went dark until the voices around her a distant buzz. Nothing made her feel safer than being with her family but they weren’t always her family. No, they had only been in her life for a few years now, and while they were the greatest years of her life, she often felt herself wander into the past.
Starting one of the heaviest stories I've ever written dedicated to my senior dog & anyone who has lost a pet.
