I am still on the parent signal group of the Berlin kindergarten and enjoying learning about who got lice, who's lost a pullover—a slightly surreal but warm co-presence.

The Trump Administration’s AI Policy Framework Has an Ideology. It Just Won't Admit It. Genevieve Smith argues that the White House's AI framework prioritizes innovation over safeguards, ignoring bias risks in real-world AI systems.

The White House’s AI framework sidelines concerns about algorithmic bias and discrimination, casting efforts to mitigate those harms as ideological interference, argues Genevieve Smith. Treating AI as “neutral” doesn’t eliminate harm; it risks scaling inequality under the guise of objectivity.

There's a special variety of Reviewer 2 whose comments uncannily resemble those in this list.

Earth and Moon from DSCOVR NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite captured this unique view of the Moon as it moved in front of the sunlit side of Earth last month. This view shows the fully illuminated “dark side” of the moon that is never visible from Earth. Ian Regan processed this version of the image to account for the Moon's motion. I hadn't seen this before. This is pretty remarkable.

“The Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Budget proposes to eliminate the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and provides $38 million to conduct an orderly shutdown of the Agency.” — NEH.gov

The NEH has $207 million for FY2026. War in Iran? 1 billion per day. We go through 4.83 NEHs a day for what?

You could say that Rock n Roll was born 111 years ago today in Arkansas, but probably not where you'd think. Before there was a Chuck Berry or Little Richard, there was those who wanted to be like her.

Rosetta Nubin better known as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the godmother of Rock was born on this day

There is an easy line to draw between Hegseth's "No stupid rules of engagement" spiel and the Tomahawk missile that killed 110 schoolgirls in Iran on the first day of this war. I wish the US media was drawing that line more forcefully.

Yes, and the number of people who see their lives actually getting worse because of this push (tx to environmental damage, energy prices, unstable labor conditions, concentration of capital, etc.) is probably bigger.

agree and I would add "about protecting people's votes" to the list.

So the fact that we bombed a girls elementary school, while likely using AI for targeting, is going to be a major headline story dominating American news coverage when exactly?

Corporate Media Buries Story of US and Israel Killing 168 in Girls School Attack No front-page stories in NYT, WSJ, WaPo. No mention on NBC and CBS Sunday Shows. No stand alone segments on Evening News shows. A death count on par with the OKC bombing is relegated to the back page.

it would also be in the long run sadly accurate.

Got it. Assuming your department has some sort of review process (e.g. for reappointment), talking with your head and mentor/s about how to prioritize your projects may still be helpful. (I realize this may be too vague or obvious to be useful. And, full disclosure: I struggle with this a lot.)

My 2 cents: having a conversation with your department head about criteria/process for promotion at your department may help to prioritize some projects over others. Talking to mentor (and/or trusted colleagues), may also help!

Sewickley father detained by ICE as 6-year-old daughter begins cancer treatment His arrest came just two days before his 6-year-old daughter, Maria, began treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma.

ICE abducted a father of a six-year-old who is undergoing cancer treatment in a suburb outside Pittsburgh on Sunday and took him to a detention center in West Virginia.

The cruelty is boundless.

The best case scenario is that Trump will waste $38 billion. The more likely outcome is that these will become warehouses of human suffering, and a permanent stain on America's history.
