This continues to increase the potential for further transmission, particularly in Africa.

Mpox remains a virus that primarily spreads within specific networks and among particularly vulnerable groups, either due to high numbers of sexual contacts or general living conditions. (10/12)

In the affected countries, population immunity is declining due to both a decreasing proportion of the population vaccinated against smallpox and annual population growth of approximately 2–3%, which outpaces the number of people being vaccinated or acquiring immunity through infection. (9/12)

In terms of vaccination, a significantly larger supply of vaccines will be required to contain the outbreak and Africa CDC is urgently asking for more vaccines initailly +6 mio. (8/12)

Thus, even though control is being achieved in countries with the initial outbreaks (DRC, Uganda, Burundi), the total disease burden from mpox in Africa continues to rise. (7/12)

Overall, the countries currently experiencing active transmission i still rising over time and now affects more than countries with af population of more than 300 mio. (6/12)

Due to the size of the country, any widespread transmission could significantly increase the overall mpox burden. Ethiopia has generally not experienced large mpox outbreaks in the past. (5/12)

At the Africa CDC meeting, it was also reported that there is now transmission in the southern part of Ethiopia. There is significant concern about preventing further spread in Ethiopia. (4/12)
