Washington DC’s 240 million-gallon sewage spill is a symptom of nationwide trouble The largest sewage spill in US history wasn’t the first, and it won’t be the last.

Washington DC's 240 million-gallon sewage spill early this year was the largest in U.S. history. But the real story is what it reveals about aging infrastructure nationwide: The EPA estimates 23,000 to 75,000 sewer overflows happen annually (and there isn’t even a national reporting system).

"What’s the point of having an expert on something in the classroom if that expert doesn’t get to decide what to say and not to say to students? If the board or the uni wants to micromanage, censor, tell us what to say and what not to say, the very idea of a university collapses."

"U.S. alliances rested on something larger: consultation, some measure of strategic continuity and the assumption that American power, however unevenly applied, operated inside a recognizable framework. That framework has collapsed."

What the Chicago Bears relocation fight can teach us about economics The battle to house the Chicago Bears’ new stadium is pitting Midwestern U.S. states against each other. Taxpayers are apt to be the losers - and not just because sports stadiums rarely live up to their economic billing.

In Georgia, a ‘Sponge Park’ Floods So the Neighborhood Won’t

"Hurricane Helene unleashed a deluge on Georgia. Much of the 16-acre park, named for Rodney Cook Sr., a longtime local politician, was submerged. The neighborhood around it was not. And that was the plan."

India’s gateway to the West is under strain - The Statesman For decades, Dubai has carefully cultivated the image of a city insulated from the turbulence of the Middle East.

T]he current conflict, is a reminder that... Dubai offers stability in an unstable region. Once shaken, that confidence can take far longer to rebuild than any damaged building or disrupted flight route."

Image of California wildfires

The hard truth about the consequences of the #ClimateCrisis — wildfires, floods, storms, droughts, heat waves and more — won’t come from climate activists who are too easily ignored or even vilified. It will come from central banks. And insurance companies. And every rational evidence-based sector.

Jürgen Habermas, German philosopher and sociologist, dies aged 96 Habermas’ political consensus-building theory argued formation of public opinion vital for democracies to survive

His most recent work, Things Needed to Get Better, was published...last year. In it, he refuses to “let defeatism have the last word”, arguing it is possible to “confront the crises of the present aggressively and finally overcome them after all”.

Amsterdam Jewish school targeted in attack No injuries were reported in what Amsterdam's Mayor Femke Halsema described as a "deliberate attack." It follows an arson attack on a synagogue in Rotterdam a day earlier.

36 times the Hebrew Bible tells us to care for the stranger. Today, the idea of treating the other kindly is rejected by too many across the world

Temple Israel shooting leaves gunman dead, kids safe Shots were fired at Temple Israel Thursday afternoon after a truck rammed into the building's front door. A security guard was injured.

Heartbreaking to read about yet another synagogue attack, and on the same day yet another university shooting. How can we not see the connections between the vitriol in our public discourse and the violence that takes place day after day?
