Oh thank you!! ❤️
On the last day of the legislative session, the Alabama Legislature passed a bill restricting faculty governance, instituting post-tenure review & creating BoT curriculum oversight. If these kinds of self-inflicted wounds haven't hit your state yet, let this be the 500th warning that they will.
HB580 is being fast-tracked and is expected to be voted on TOMORROW. Read our full statement against this bill below, and then please consider calling your rep and telling them to vote NO.

On March 23 student staffers at Alice and Nineteen Fifty-Six filed a lawsuit against the University over the abrupt closure of the magazines in December, arguing that their First Amendment rights were violated. Let’s ensure these students still have a platform for free expression on campus.
HB580 came out of nowhere, had a hearing scheduled during spring break when legislators knew faculty would be away, and was moved out of committee with no discussion on Wednesday. That's not okay.
There’s been a lot of chatter about the dangerous SAVE America Act. TL;DR: Republicans still don’t have the votes. Here’s the state of play. 🧵
Update: The faculty senate/tenure bill passed out of committee with no questions from the members. I thought this was a public hearing with comments, but it wasn't.

On Dec. 1, university officials told student journalists at Nineteen Fifty-Six, a magazine celebrating Black student culture, and Alice, a magazine centered on women’s fashion and lifestyle, that their publications would be shuttered immediately.
Over the last year, you could have given into anger and despair.
Instead, you’ve organized in the largest numbers this country has ever seen to reclaim the power of the pro-democracy majority.
We could not be more thankful for you and everything you’re doing to defy Trump’s agenda.
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
60% of eligible Black voters turned out in Alabama for Obama in 2012, and it hasn't been that high ever since.
Here's an earlier story from @rchapoco.bsky.social at @alabamareflector.com with the data and potential reasons.

There are so many terrible things about SNAP funding being willfully throttled, and just one of them is being an org trying to figure out how to help without being overwhelmed.
This is one of the best analyses of the total grift and scammery of AI in education I’ve seen, and it is a MUST Read: “Higher Ed’s Rush To Adopt AI Is About So Much More Than AI - defector.com/higher-eds-r...
Our ability to comprehend daily events has been corrupted by a toxic info environment where political & attentional dynamics distort & manipulate our “collective sensemaking” processes. Our “official” sources are now products of that same environment. Reality fractures, along with the social fabric.
"Living through the rise of a dictatorship just means inhabiting a space that is gradually shrinking. There’s no point in resisting, not at first. You just make do with whatever breathing room you still have—until you lose that too."
As a historian of computing, can confirm, this is exactly what happened

Things I have searched for in the past week:
1. How do you get children to sleep in their own beds?
2. Are all 5 year olds sociopaths?
3. How to manage time out effectively
4. How to treat poison ivy
It’s been quite a summer.
