Funny how crowd estimates were ~2.5 million across the country for yesterday's protests but all the news agencies say "thousands"

Trust me...I was NOT PAID to protest in the rain at a windy 40F. I was there because I care about democracy and our country and human rights.

We take tariffs on our beautiful Heard Island very seriously. We will be consulting all mammals and flightless birds and will make an announcement in the near future detailing our response. #heardisland #tariff #mcdonaldisland #trumptariff

Trump imposes tariffs on uninhabited Heard and McDonald Islands near Antarctica Australian prime minister surprised after remote external territories – including islands home to penguins – targeted by US president

The big question is - will the penguins now impose reciprocal tariffs?

Every fictional lake I was able to come up with is just referred to as ‘a lake’ or ‘the lake.’ The only one that has a name is Long Lake, from the Lord of the Rings, but that is definitely not a small lake. Sorry! The folks over at #booksky might be able to help.

This horizontal photo is split in half. The bottom half is a grey bedrock with green and tan grass on it. The upper half is a background of snow covered mountain. Along the bedrock ridge, splitting the white from the green, is an andean condor facing the camera at a distance.

Donald Trump’s USDA reverses freeze on funding to Maine’s public universities It was an abrupt reversal of the funding freeze that was announced in a Monday notice to the University of Maine System.

It has been an emotional rollercoaster following the USDA freeze earlier this week. Staff feared layoffs; grad students wondered if they’ll make rent. We just learned that USDA funds will be restored. This is a win for Maine’s farmers, growers, and kids, too!

Flashback to an early rise during summer '22 fieldwork in South Dakota. Unzipped the door of my tent to find out I was under investigation by this herd of curious horses.

Yes, your posts introduced me to the idea. Thank you! Now, after scrolling through the usual doom and gloom on my feed, I do a search for #shelfie and admire the collections.

Trump administration cancels $400 million worth of grants and contracts to Columbia University The administration said the cuts were made because of "the school's continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students,"

Given that Trump is empowering Nazi wannabe Musk and has let neo-Nazi conspiracy theorists take high level posts, this has nothing to do with "antisemitism." It is the garden-variety war against higher education that right-wing authoritarians always do. abc7ny.com/post/trump-a...

A whale vertebra partially submerged in the tide, with raindrops visible on the water surface.

This warm spell has reminded me of Tierra del Fuego. Maybe it's the humidity? The smell of melting snow? The chilly breeze? Here's a whale vertebra, part of a nearly intact skeleton that served as a landmark while conducting fieldwork on Isla Navarino in early March, 2024.

One says “don’t buy stuff Friday February 28th. The other says we have power. Below it says No Amazon, Walmart, target, gas food, gas. Below that it says OK small business, use cash. I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!

USDA announces Title IX investigation into UMaine The announcement comes a day after the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights launched an investigation into the Maine Department of Education and a Maine school district.

Oh, really? So, like, the entire federal government after Trump’s EO’s? “President Trump has made it abundantly clear: taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars will not support institutions that discriminate against women,” U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said in a news release.

Like sharks, Cookie Monsters have existed for tens of millions of years with little major evolutionary change. Being a soft-bodied organism, it's rare to get a fossil with such clarity of preservation as this one; what a lucky find!

“Maine may be one of the first states to undergo an investigation by his Administration, but we won’t be the last. Today, the President of the United States has targeted one particular group on one particular issue which Maine law has addressed. But you must ask yourself: who and what will he target next, and what will he do? Will it be you? Will it be because of your race or your religion? Will it be because you look different or think differently? Where does it end? In America, the President is neither a King nor a dictator, as much as this one tries to act like it – and it is the rule of law that prevents him from being so."

Gov. Mills showed precisely the sort of integrity in the face of political pressure that the majority of the party currently lacks. More importantly, she did so extemporaneously and without hesitation from a purple state where this isn't a universally popular position.
